How do you get a vasectomy?

I know it's probably quite simple - ie he goes to the GP and asks, but does anyone know how long it takes before the deed is finally done? And what kind of criteria you have to fullfil? My brother had one (he never wanted children) and I know he had to wait about 4 years on the NHS before he got to have it. He is only 35 so probably that's why. Dp on the other hand is a prodigious breeder - 4 children and another on the way - and will be 38 by the time the last is born. I'm sure he'd qualify but what is the proceedure?

From going to the doctors to DH having the snip took 3 weeks.

There's a local GP near here who does them privately for around £100.

I have been thinking of organising a Snip PArty event to get reluctant DH/'P's to HAVE IT DONE!!

Any ideas anyone? or alternatively how did you persuade yours to do the honest thing?!!!

Hi Cha
my bf had it done almost 2 years ago whilst with his ex - after having 2 kids and emotionally pressurised into having the second, he decided this was his only means of taking control - here we are now though, having to fork out 3 grand for a reversal since it's not offered on NHS anymore, all because, in my opinion, there was no counselling or guidance before the initial op.

i think the wait for the vasectomy was as Breeze said - a matter of weeks from making initial enquiry with GP to having it done.

As you can imagine my feelings on this are a bit clouded since chances of successful reversals are not by any means guaranteed and if it fails we then have to decide whether to go for sperm donor!!!

Sorry to rant, just had to vent some frustration on a topic which is quite real for me right now -hope thats ok!!

I can say that Dh and I are very happy with the snip and having it done, but we did mention at the time that it would have been very easy to get caught up in it all. I mean they only counselling we got was some doctor asking us why we wanted it, which we replied that I had had bad PND and wouldn't risk it again. DS was 8 months old at the time and DS was 29. She said we don't normally like to do it, but I guess you made up your mind.

DH has his done last month - went to GP, said "I want snip", he referred him to a clinic locally that specialises in "non-surgery" technique (she uses laser) and was seen within the fortnight to complete forms.

Forms completed and DH went in the following week. I had no contact with the surgeon until we got chatting afterwards in the waiting room.

My dh has offered to have it after our next child (amazingly). I was wondering however, as I will have to have a c-section, whether they could just sterilise me while they were about it. I realise that this is off topic a bit, but does anyone know.

Good luck to your dh Cha!

My friend had her 5th child (who was unplanned) by C-section but the Consultant still refused to sterilise her during the operation

XAusted · 06/06/2003 19:46

Apparently you could wait around a year in this area to get it done.

Tissy · 06/06/2003 19:59

I was told I couldn't be sterilised during the section as well. I think the bits have to return to their normal size first!

judetheobscure · 06/06/2003 21:13

A friend of mine has just been sterilised as part of the cs op but there were very pressing medical reasons for this to be done. She is also in a lot more pain than she was with her previous cs ops.
