my 14 week dd has been ill for 3 days now, took her to hospital today because she only had 6oz of formula in 15 hours and is very very blocked up and finding it hard to breathe...

we have been sent home with antibiotics, if not any better tomorrow gotta take her back...possible admittance...what else can i do apart from using karvol, saline nose drops and bowl fulls of vicks going?

have propped her matress up but tbh she is sleeping constantly which isn't like her at all...we managed to get 4oz down her half hour after her first dose of antibiotics.

anyone else had experiences of bronciolitis at such a young age?

Did they say broncholitis? Poor little dd, and poor you. Its rough when they're so little.

My dd2 had bronchiolitis quite badly at 4 weeks old, and was in hospital for a week (she had other airway issues which meant she was very ill with it) with an 8 week old and a 3 month old....so I've seen a few very young ones with it, and recover (fast, once they get past the 5th day) from it.

The things to look out for are dehydration from not drinking, and any difficulty breathing - if her ribs pull in when she breathes, or if she's breathing faster than usual, for instance. I remember dd vomiting all her feeds back up, and having bubbly spit around her mouth - both can be signs of bronchiolitis.

Antibiotics wouldn't do anything if it IS bronch, because its usually caused by a virus - often RSV. But all the admitted kids I saw were on them anyway, in case of secondary chest infection, so probably a good thing your dd is on them regardless.

If the 4oz have stsayed down, thats good. If you have a humidifier to put in her room, thats great - if not, a wet towel or bowls of water on a hot radiator can help.

Hope the ABs make a difference, fast, and that she is better during the night...but don't hesitate to go back if she's isn't, IME hospitals are very very used to helping small babies cope with bronch and babies can get sick very fast, though they recover equally fast once they turn that corner.

Wishing you a peaceful night, xx

been back to hospital tonight just got home because she was having trouble breathing and her chest is going right in, bubbly spit the lot, turned blue round the mouth so that why i took her back..on call gp was useless so demanded to see peadeatrician..he was more helpful...made her have a feed there (only 1.5oz) gave her a good check over, basically gottta keep the bowls of vicks and karvol going and try and get her to feed little and often.

have open access now so can go straight to childrens ward if she gets worse...today and yesterday have been her real bad days so hpefully only a couple left...he said 2-3 days and we are on day 2 so hopefully a day or so!

I hope your little lovely gets well soon, you did the right thing going back to hospital. I have a 14 week old dd as well so really do feel for you.

gorge2003 · 13/12/2009 00:13

i hope she gets better soon too, its really horrible seeing her like this. its so scary especially seeing her little chest going in like it is!!!

hopefully she will start perking up in the next day or two.

my ds (3.5years) has asthma but never seen anything like this...bit paranoid too cos took two miscarriages to get her here so she is our little miracle and hate seeing her this ill!

Ah gorge, I'm sorry, its awful isn't it? And I do understand (had lots of miscarriages before my two dds, and fertility treatment - makes it harder to trust they're here to stay, somehow, even though they clearly are!).

You were absolutely right to take her back, and if you are concerned about her again, do it again - use the open access. I know you will, but just to affirm you are right to trust your instincts and don't let anyone make you feel paranoid: you're just being careful, and rightly so. She's very little.

Its true the virus tends to peak and then they stop getting worse, then suddenly get better - hopefully tomorrow for your dd. Hang in there, xx

she seems a little better today, taking her for a walk in her pram in a bit...advice of paed last night to have her in as much fresh air as possible...she is managing to take 1.5-2oz every 2ish hours today so thatsa lot better tha yesterday!

and she is cooing away and smiling again! her cooing is like music to my ears! its lovely seeing her a bit happier today!
