Anyone had any sinus surgery?

I am booked in to have a Septoplasty and FESS on Jan 4th.

Just wondered if anyone has gone through this and what it was actually like.

Both my Mum and cousin (blocked noses very much a family failing) have had ops. Not sure of the name though, something where they chip a bit out of the bone at the top of the nose to increase flow? And then my Mum has had power wash outs as well.

Both said, obviously, it's not nice- but not totally horrendously unbearable, the pain after is what you'd imagine round the schnozz for a few days. Bruising I remember was minimal, I think my Mum had what looked like a black eye for a week-ish.

Thats sounds similar to what I am having done, bone chipped off the middle bit. The ENT is going to try balloonsinuplasty, but am rather worried as he has told me I am his patient, but not to worry as he has had lots of practise on dummies!

Thanks for replying,

have had a sceptoplasty and a sub mucus ressection, was only in hospital for a day but had to do the most awful sinus washouts with warm saline to clear the blood from the operation. Had to draw water right up my nose and let it out through my mouth...it was horrible. it helped for a few years and then all my problems acme back and the tip of my nose collapsed very slightly so i now have a dip at the end

mynaughtylittlesister · 13/12/2009 00:42

Thanks alypaly, not sure what a sub mucus ressesction is but as they have not mentioned that to me I probably wont be having it done! I too should only be in for a day, just wondered what the recovery was like after thats all!

you just feel as if you have been hit by a slammed door for s few days and the end of you nose goes a bit bendier than normal. Its the nasal douches, they make you wretch. i would say 2 or 3 days off work and you will be fine.

Have they warned you about the possible collapse of the nasal bones as it can weaken the structure

mynaughtylittlesister · 13/12/2009 22:56

No he hasn't! But what I didn't mention to add is that I am his first real life patient in ballonsinuplasty, I have to say after the pain I have had today then bring it on, i have 3 wks to wait, and at the moment its 3 wks too long! Can't believe I am saying that!

Alypaly, I have been told to to off 3 wks!!!!! Am rather worried now...

  • take a look at this link. 2-3 days discomfort and 7 days max

I had a turbinectomy (a long time ago) when I was 25 and it was not fun at the time but brilliant results. The ENT said it was one of the biggest turbinates he had removed (what a distinction!) but I could definitely breathe easier ever since and sinus infections are much more infrequent. Better drainage I guess - erk. My septum was deviated because of the enlarged turbinate, so might be similar arrangement to yours - good luck, I am sure it will be worth it.

I don't remember having more than a few days off?

mynaughtylittlesister · 13/12/2009 23:23

Whats a turbinectomy? My ENT has said that the deviant in my septum was blocking my sinuses! Is that the same thing?

Had those procedures about 6 years ago. Worked beautifully until I had a baby then it all went rubbish and blocked up again.

The procedures aren't nice. I went private and got a over-night stay, the NHS was day surgery and too much of a wait so I decided to use my savings. I think day surgery would have been a bit hideous - whilst it wasn't agonising pain it was certainly uncomfortable and I had some morphine afterwards (which was nice...) The worse thing for me was not being able to blow my nose for two weeks. Or being able to taste. Food, that is. My mouth tasted horrible and I was very aware it didn't smell too good. It was a bit grim. I had a saline squirty thing but my nose just was so swollen and blocked and I snored and found it hard to sleep.

It is painful at first, then the congestion and swelling is just very, very uncomfortable. However, it did stop me feeling as though I had been kicked in the face which my sinuses felt like before the op.

Good luck. I hope it helps.

mynaughtylittlesister · 14/12/2009 21:08

Thanks Bootle, sounds like its a good job its being done after christmas!

Did you have it done again?

one of the other things to take into account is they normally warn you that there is a slight chance that you can loose your sense of taste and smell, but it is only slight.

pipsqueak · 14/12/2009 23:58

had it - horrible at the time but only for a short while and so worth it in the longer run . the worst bit of mine was the day after when hte nuse sort of pulled a tampon like thing out of each nostril and then it bled a lot which gets you down a bit but soon sorted .. good luck with it !xx

alypaly · 15/12/2009 00:20

eewww pip....i have just remembered the tampon thing. I also had a finger of a rubber glove up my nose packed with bandage aswell and abot 1000feet of ribbon gauze bandage.
