urticaria/hives- occasional trout-pout

Hello

for the past few weeks I've had increasingly bad hives, and on a couple of occasions, my mouth has swollen up to make a weird-looking trout-pout.

blood tests etc show nothing unusual (I thought from a quick surf on the net it might be linked to my thyroid deficiency, but that is well controlled)

I'm on some antihistamines but these aren't having too much effect yet

anyone else had experience of this? what has been the cause for you?

I get this now and again urticaria as i know it , quite scary at times .. i had it a while back when i went to dentist had some work done , had mild rash when i went but took AH , then the next day woke up and i looked like pete burns ..lol although wasnt funny at time .
I still dont know what triggered it , maybe rubber gloves .

I also get this with Asprin to .

it is a strange thing , lightning to know im not the only one who gets it .

have you seen your doc about it ?

newbrooms · 10/12/2009 01:46

thanks mum of 2000, I've got the Pete Burns thing right now.

doc gave me antihistamines, plus ran the tests. told me today that I have to just sit it out for a few days and see if the AHs work

nice to know there is someone else with the same thing. all the websites I am dealing with make it sound quite a chronic problem, I'm trying to be positive (although itching like hell at 1.45am)...

morning , NB how you doing this morning ?
How long have you had it for ?

is it just your lips ?

I get it also on my joint areas to , like hips , elbows , finger joints and big red blobs up my back and all very hot ...comes from no where .. i really dont know why or what it is and doctors dont ever seem to bothered by it and have never offered to have tests done ...and when it goes i think oh good , but im sure its in my system always

once i do remember AH didnt work with me and i had to have some kind of steroid injection , sounds scary but all went back to normal very quickly after that , if doesnt improve maybe go back to doc again .

hope things get better for you soon

xxx

Hi I'm also getting this alot recently - about ten episodes over the past few months and very random - can't pin it down to anything.

I need to have blood tests and have got histamine to take when things start.

It's not pleasant is it - last Sun my palms started to tingle then my lower lip swelled up.

newbrooms · 11/12/2009 12:01

hello - thanks so much for the support. My eyelids started puffing last night, but not too bad today. night-time seems the worst. but the hives on my body are calming down, perhaps the antihistamines are kicking in. I had a moment of clarity and realised that a polyurothane-backed mattress cover might have got it started a few months ago - it also might be the reason things are worst at night. so I took that off yesterday and feel that I've done something constructive.

Sincitylover - might be as well going to the doctors. from what I see on-line, it looks as if longer-term anti-h is what is needed to keep it at bay

thanks again - I really appreciate the sharing of experiences

Hiya. I've been suffering with this for the past 9/10 months. It started with me just after ds2 was born. When I first went to the docs, he said it was an allergic reaction to something, but nothing in my environment had changed apart from having a new baby. I get it bad every day and AH don't really work for me. I itch constantlyt from the top of my head to the tips of my toes and must llok like I have fleas!
Wherever I scratch swells up. It is often my face and neck, feet, hands, legs, arms, well everywhere really.
I'm thinking mine might be citrus as my palms get itchy if I peel an orange for the ds's.
I was put on a weeks course of steroids to see if that'd stop it but it didn't
But, I haven't been for a bloodtest in a while. My liver count has been high since ds2 was born.
My gp won't do it, they send me to the walk in blood clinic at the hospital and it is akways so busy, I can't sit there with a 2yo and a 10mo for an hour!

ive got this. Really itchy, welty palms sometimes, feet, hands, shoulders, near my belly button. lips swell up, eyelids,
I got sent to see an immunologist twice. diagnosed as 'idiopathic urticaria' basically no cause. Although I have identified that rapid changes in temperature can trigger it. ie if i go to put the bins out in bare feet, by the time ive got in, the tops of my feet are itchy, and the backs of my hands have come up in welts.
The same with coming in and sitting by the fire immediately.

I had this for many years and was treated with steroids. After seeing a different doctor who advised I should never have been on the steroids for so long, he recommended seeing a homeopath (This particular Dr is quite into alternative therapies) and it cleared up almost immediately and I only had one or two attacks after and none for the last 7 or so years. HTH

its amazing (looking online etc) how debilitating this can be and how there doesn't seem to be any clarity about causes etc. Mrs Always Right, I don't know much about homoeopathy (is it the treatment with strong distillations watered down?)

Littleboyblue, isn't it amazing how doctors etc don't get how hard it is for a mother to get treatment, with LOs in tow. I really hope someone can help you out so you can get something sorted out...

looking online, I see that I might be able to get stronger antihistamines, so might try that...

Yes it is, not really sure how it works but am pretty convinced it does!

zisforzebra · 19/12/2009 01:07

I've had this three times with two different causes. Cause 1 was sensodyne toothpaste and the inside of my mouth, nasal passages and eyelids became covered in itchy bumps. I think it must be one of the ingredients because I recently used arm & hammer whitening and it had the same effect.

Cause 2 was Penicillin. I had two 10-day courses back to back for tonsillitis and then started to come up in large, white welts whenever I scratched myself (no matter how lightly) My doctor said that it could be the start of a Penicillin allergy and prescribed some antihistamines. It was weird actually because I used to take Penicillin everyday when I was a teenager due to a compromised immune system with no problem.

katnkittens · 19/12/2009 02:13

I have had this constantly for over a year now. I barely get any respite from it and am covered in cuts from scratching my skin so hard it breaks

I started taking fexofenadine (AH) and it gives me a few hours peace usually enough for me to sleep. TBH the GP was pretty crap and didn't offer me any tests.

I'm 20 weeks pregnant now and it supposedly gets better, mine has gotten worse and I'm currently only allowed to take cetirizine which is almost useless. It's driving me insane and I can't sleep with my DH because I scratch all night and keep him awake.

I believe it has an auto-immune basis. In extreme cases they offer chemo like drugs to dampen the immune system which can help.

I'll definitely be looking into doing something after this baby is born because it's driving me crazy!

katnkittens · 19/12/2009 02:16

Oh and I'm lucky I have never had anything on my face. My ankles and feet are the worst affected areas, I get them almost everywhere but usually my limbs.

Itchy palms are the worst!

alypaly · 19/12/2009 19:08

it sounds like urticaria but get doctor to have a look at tests for angiooedema too as this has similar characteristics and needs treatment. How worrying for you with pouty lips and swelling
