Anyone has experience of toddler fractures? Getting conflicting info from docs.

18mo fell two steps down the stairs on Monday and wouldn't stand/walk afterwards. Took her to A&E where she was x-rayed and a very nice SHO diagnosed a toddler fracture.

DD has been in a full leg plaster cast for two days, told not to let her move around. Went to fracture clinic today only to be told by registrar that there is no fracture.

I quizzed him and insisted on seeing the consultant but they were adamant they couldn't see a fracture. But they didn't look at the x-ray with me and the SHO at A&E seemed pretty convinced.

Anyway DD is now without plaster but still won't walk confidently about/run like she would normally. Don't know if this is because she's tentative after having the plaster cast on or whether there is a fracture and they've just missed it.

Feel very confused and wish I'd insisted on them looking again with me present.

Anyone got any advice?
Cheers

tbh a reg and con would know more about this than an a/e sho. This is why you go to ortho clinics post a/e.
Rest assured that you have been given the best advice and perhaps your lo has been given a bit of a fright and is now reticent to weight bear.
poor you and dd

Hi Elmmum,
My DS was aged 21 months and fell a very small height from a climbing frame while I was with him and broke his collar bone.
Tis a long story, but he was obv distraught and in pain, we went straight to A&E where he was x-rayed and we were told no fracture. We ended going back a further 4 times and two more sets of x-rays-still told no fracture. After a week a large lump appeared, back again-still no fracture. After 4 weeks I went to my GP who referred us to an ultrsound, and she agreed with me that it looked and sounded like a fracture. Within seconds of the ultrasound the Dr confirmed a fracture that had healed (lump was new bone re-growth). It is very common to miss fractures in small children, could be due to excess blood or blood clots. I am no expert but if you still have concerns go to your GP and discuss it with them. I googled missed fractures and collarbones-very common and lots of stories on there that made me panic. Hope your Lo is OK.
