I have a relative who is losing weight at an alarming rate

she isn't anorexic or anything, but she has got intolerences towards certain food groups

she has lost over a stone in the last 6 weeks, she has had a battery of tests today, but does anyone have any idea what the cause could be apart from the obvious?

she seems well otherwise

I don't want to google

A friend of mine had the same - lost absolutely loads of weight. We were all worried about her. Turned out to be Lactose intolerance - right as rain now. Hope your relative is ok.

I can understand your worry, a few years ago my brother lost two stones in as many months (and he was slim to begin with). I ran through all the scenarios in my mind. We were so relieved when it turned out to be an overactive thyroid, even though it did go on to cause him many problems.

Keeping my fingers crossed for your relative, let us know how she gets on.

has she given up foods because of intolerances? i gave up gluten and dairy for 3 months and lost two stone without even trying, and i was eating loads of fat foods too

It could be absolutely anything to be honest. My brother ended up weighing less than 7 stones before his crohns disease was diagnosed. He too is fine now after surgery.

I hope she finds out what the problem is soon and gets it sorted.

I've just read my post back and realised it doesn't particularly read how I meant it to with 'it could be anything' (sorry!it doesn't sound very nice when I read it back and that isn't how I meant it).

What I meant to say really was that you are probably fearing all sorts but it is quite possible it is something that could improve quickly once treated. My brother changed so much in a few short months.

Food intolerances can cause huge, rapid weight loss, especially if you give up a whole load of foods. When I was trying to work out what my potato allergy was (knew I was allergic to something I was eating lots of, wasn't sure what) I lost massive amounts giving up wheat,

This might be TMI but are her food intolerances resulting in lots of vomiting/diarrhea? Sometimes people with food intolerances just can't keep anything in and aren't getting any nutritional benefit.

Thanks for all the replies

She has had food intolences for years and the weight loss has happened in the last month

She is very slim anyway, so she looks very fragile at the moment

My husband lost loads of weight before a diagnosis of coeliac disease.

My son lost loads of weight before a diagnosis of T1 diabetes.

I feared the worst for both of them, but both are well, 'nicely covered' and happy now.
