Started a new job, now working 5 days a week. Having a slice of wholegrain toast for breakfast and a wholegrain ham or chicken softie (bun) for lunch with cupasoup every day. Seem to be very windy in the afternoon, trapped wind and bloating. Also my poos are generally quite soft and squishy and not "formed". (nice

wondered if i was eating too much wheat? what could i have instead that's easy to make and transport to work? Thanks everyone.

pasta salad in tub made with wheat-free ( rice) pasta?
Homemade soup in a wide neck flask?
Cottage cheese and fruit?
Salad in a tub, with rice salad , prawns, chicken veg etc.
(How can you tell I can't eat wheat!)

I used to eat like far too much wheat and was convinced that I was addicted (i.e eat half a loaf of bread in one sitting). Very similar symptms as you describe.

I started baking my own gluten free bread so I culd have the occassinal sandwich and I noticed the difference immediately. Lost weight, feel much less bloated, feel I have more energy.

I suggest you try that or perhaps get corn bread or even just a nice salad from time to time. Soup is good. Even something like a homemade meat/veg sauce with rice is good microwaved up.

Just a couple of other ideas- as ABD says- try gluten free breads, or maybe eat white bread occasionally instead of the wholegrain which might be just too rough for your guts and exacerbate mild IBS?

I used to be like you- thought I;d eat more wheat- every meal almost as either bread or pasta. I had very loose bowels though thought it was normal. What I did find was that it made my eczema worse, so now I am wheat free apart from the occasional treat.

A quick question re GF bread-I have asked santa for a breadmaker as my son is on GF diet. Do you need to buy lots of ingredients to make your own or is there a mix you can buy for breadmaker? [clueless emoticon]

purplepeony · 09/12/2009 10:10

I have always bought a mix- I think Dove farms does one and I got it at Waitrose.

You can make your own with amix of rice, and potato flours etc etc.

However, the bread has never turned out well
Very hard and solid!
I now just buy it ready made- I think it's called Antoinette Savill, the brand, but there are loads more- I just found that loads of gluten freebreads have tonnes of additives/chemical, so tried to find one that had the least.

ABETADAD
How was your GF bread in the breadmaker? Did you use a mix?
Thanks Purplepeony. Pros and cons to both

I have a Kenwood breadmaker standard Gluten Free program 9.

Recipe is 500 g of Doves Farm Gluten Free plain flour, 1 tsp cider vinegar, 1tsp salt, 2 tsp Xanthan Gum, 2 large eggs, 45 ml veg oil, 2 tsp yeast, 25 g of sugar and 410 ml water.

I mix in raisins, nuts, and just about anything else after about 15 mins into the kneading cyle to make it interesting or even just plain. It works great. I keep it in the fridge and it lasts about a week.

waitingforgodot · 09/12/2009 19:35

thanks for that! Do they sell xanthan gum in tescos/asda?

ABetaDad · 09/12/2009 20:30

A number of Xanthan Gum suppliers were suggested on this thread. Tesco is one of those suggested but I went to a local specialist health food shop.
