If you are certain this is a migraine, are you familiar with the triptan drugs (sumatriptan, naratriptan, etc.)?

thesockmonsterofdoom · 07/12/2009 14:24

not heard of them, what do they do, was looking at taking something with gp a while ago to prevent them but then they seemed to get etter. I have never had one last this long though.

Sumatryptan (imigran if you get it over the counter) had changed my life. I used to get monthly migraines like the ones you described, vomiting- the works. Now, as soon as I feel one coming, I take a sumatryptan and even if the headache develops, it's "only" a headache, I can still work, eat, tolerate light etc.

I usually find one works within about 45 mins.

If you can't get hold of imigran (over the counter) try syndol, but they will make you sleepy, perhaps not a good idea for a party!

AtheneNoctua · 07/12/2009 14:29

The triptan medicines abort the headache. They are not a pain killer. They work by contracting the dialated blood vessels which is what causes the pain.

If you know for a fact it is a migraine you can go to a pharmacist and they will ask you some questions (like is it severe? is it one sided, etc.) Then they will let you but two sumatriptan pills for some rediculoust price... like a tenner or something. Anyway, the pills are fab. You will get to the party.

You can get other triptans on prescription from your GPO, but this one is the only one available over the counter. And I think it is called Imigran recovery. (Imigran is the GSK brand name for sumatritan)

Go get this stuff. It is fantastic.

thesockmonsterofdoom · 07/12/2009 14:30

Will they have imigran in boots, could go after picked dd1 up from school.
Also have just taken some Migraleave on top of the dihydrocdiene so I am not sure I shyould take anything else. at5 the moment it is just a headache but I know it is goingt to develop iykwim.

Imigran recovery

AtheneNoctua · 07/12/2009 14:33

You can still take triptans on top of pain killers.

Imigran recovery (as far as I know) is the only triptan which does not require a prescription.

thesockmonsterofdoom · 07/12/2009 14:34

Ok just googled imigran, off to boots, I will go to the ball says it takes up to 2 hours, should get to the shop about 4 and party is at 7. it won't get past the headache until I am sick so if I can stop that for a while I should be ok.
sometimes being a woman sucks.

AtheneNoctua · 07/12/2009 14:35

Yes, they should have it at boots. Go get the medicine first. And save the other pill for when you are at the party just in case it comes back.

Then... go see your GP and get a prescription for more. I actually prefer naramig (naratriptan). The side effects are fewer. It lasts longer, but it also take longer to start working.

For today, Imigran Recovery is your best friend.

AtheneNoctua · 07/12/2009 14:37

Tell the pharmacist:

You have previously been diagnosed with migraine and you recognise this headache as a migraine. If you also tell them it is one sided and it really bloody hurts that will also help convince the pharmacist you have a migraine.

borderslass · 07/12/2009 15:29

try and get imagran off the doctor its about £7 for 2 tablets my pharmacist wont sell me it because I get 6 on prescription I've tried everything since I was 12 and this has been the best but you need to take it as soon as you feel it coming on.

That's ridiculous! Complain! It is available over the counter, I don't see how they can refuse to sell it you.

Try a different chemist? Maybe that one didn't have a pharmacist available to nod that it was OK to sell it to you?

Or your local NHS drop in place?

There is a list of questions the pharmacist will ask you. You just need to get the answers and go to a new chemist.

Here are a few for next time:

  1. You have been previously diagnosed with amigraine and you recognise this headache as a migraine.
  1. The headache is on one side of your head.
  1. It is bloody painful
  1. It is throbbing
  1. You have previously been prescribed sumatriptan and it cured the headache (although the headache might later return)
  1. You might alos tell them that sometimes when you get this headache you feel nautious.
thesockmonsterofdoom · 09/12/2009 07:58

thanks, it was the have you previously been prescribed that I answered wrong. headache has finally gone (everything crossed) so I am going to ask the doc to prescribe me some so I am prepared for next time. Thanks for all your help.

Try taking magnesium too. Not when you get one but daily. I got loads of migraines a few years ago - 5 in a week I think and I went to the doc. She recommended magnesium. A couple of days later I got another one and it seemed to stay in the back of my head and neck so I went to the chiropracter. He also recommended the magnesium.

He told me that both he and the doctor had been at a conference on migraine/headaches and a specialist had said that there had been some good results in prevention from taking magnesium supplements.

I actually haven't had one since but I haven;t taken the magnesium - the chiro seemed to do the trick for me.

thesockmonsterofdoom · 09/12/2009 10:26

funny actually I was thinking I wonder if I should go and get a sports massage or something, maybe to tense. will definatley try magnesium.
