Anyone with an asthmatic dc NOT let them have the jab ?

My feelings on the jab are that it hasn't been tested enough, and I don't want it and don't want my dc to have it.

My view was also the same about the tamiflu.

At that point non of us had been offered the jab so that desicion was easy to make.

Dd2 has had asthma since she was a baby and i'd say between the ages of 6mths and 4 years, a bad cold would always land her in hospital because of the asthma, and she was once quite poorly with penumonia.

However, since the age of about 6/7 her asthma has been alot better and now sometimes even a cold doesn't leave her needing her inhlaers. Occasionally they do.

Have had a letter from the gp this morning, offering dd2 the swine flu jab as she is in one of the risk groups. Thing is though, she has never been offered the normal flu jab, so why offer her this ??

I am just really unsure of what to do now. I really don't want her to have it, but then if she doesn't have it and gets ill, I will never forgive myself.

My ds has asthma , has steroid inhalers and singulair daily.

We decided not to give him the SF vaccine becasue he was extremely ill after his mmr vaccine. He was ill for weeks.

We will take the chance.

brimfull · 05/12/2009 09:24

So not really becasue I distrust the vaccine (have had it myself ) but becasue of ds' previous reactions

Thanks ggirl

I think at the moment, I'm still thinking that I won't be letting her have it.

We are not going to give DS2 the vaccine, though it's not been an easy decision and I'm still wavering. DS2 is autistic and had bad reaction to baby vaccinations. Swine flu levels seem fairly low here atm (crossing fingers tightly) and his asthma is so far well controlled with steroids this year (though last year he was in hospital twice).

Mind you, we haven't been offered it yet.

JoeyBettany · 20/12/2009 07:12

OK,I've let ds1 have the vaccine as he is asthmatic.

He had it last week and the same evening had a slight fever. The following day, though, his asthma wa really bad and continued to deteriorate over the next few days until he needed oral steroids.

No idea if this was connected to the vaccine or not but as his asthma is exacerbated by cold and flu like symtoms it seems likely.

PfftTheMagicDragon · 20/12/2009 07:34

DS is asthmatic and he has not had the jab (although we have not yet been offered it so it's hard to say how I will feel when offered the direct choice).

My DS is like your DD, colds have put him in hospital in the past, though his asthma is managed so it does not affect his life other than this. I have so far decided that he will not have it, but it's an awful decision to have to make, isn't it?

foxinsocks · 20/12/2009 07:37

is she on inhalers regularly at all?

both mine had/have asthma as babies/toddlers with ds needing a lot of treatment. He still gets v severe chest infections. Dh is asthmatic. None of them have been offered the jab and according to the surgery, won't be (until they get round to children!).

I believe that ds may have had it. He was incredibly unwell and if I could have had a jab that protected him against it, I would have done. He really struggled to breathe and it was horrible and a month later, he is still coughing.

foxinsocks · 20/12/2009 07:39

(we also need to have the jab that isn't cultured in egg because of the egg allergy and there seems to be lower stock of that)

we also don't get offered the flu jab normally either (when I say we, I mean dh and the kids)

My DS (4) has asthma and he had a dose of 0.25 4 weeks ago. He is due another dose of 0.25 tomorrow. I have read on here that some GPs are only offering 1 0.25 dose now.
My GP hasn't made any contact to cancel.
I am going to cancel.
Has anyone got any up-to-date info?
I will call clinic tomorrow.
Any input? Thanks

I'm asthmatic and had the jab three days ago. So far my only side effect has been a tender arm at the site of the jab

LovingBeingAMummy · 20/12/2009 21:31

My DS only had a tender arm for a few hours on the day of the jab.

It has been reported that children who received the second jab suffered high temps.

I have just researched on direct.gov.uk and it says that healthy children under 10 should receive one 0.25 dose.

Immunocompromised children should have two 0.25.

that clears up my issue

My cousin in France has a mildly asthmatic 9 year old and her private very qualified doctor said he didn't advise having the vaccine and that as asthma was mild it wasn't a concern.
