High fever after swine flu vaccine

sweetgrapes · 04/12/2009 16:51

Dd had the swine flu vaccine at school on tuesday and is still very poorly and with a high fever (friday).

Tuesday night was 44+ but after that its stuck around 40. Got her antibiotics today. No mention of any antiviral as apparently the vaccine can't cause swine flu.

So she has calpol and amoxycillin now. Does this sound right or should I have questioned the gp a bit more?

omg that is high poor thing. How old is she? What did GP prescribe AB for?

mumonthenet · 04/12/2009 16:56

Fever is a side effect of the vaccine.

Does the GP think she has SF? It is possible of course.

sweetgrapes · 04/12/2009 17:23

The vaccine is not made from the live virus so it can't cause swine flu. (apparently)
and dd doesn't have any other symptoms like vomiting, runny nose etc so the GP thought that's it's not swine flu and 'just' reaction from the vaccine.
The AB was for secondary infections. She checked in dd's ear and since it was a little red and enflammed, prescribed the AB.
Dd is 8 and is quite prone to fevers/ flu/colds whatever. She has sn and is underweight.

She had her school christmas outing coming up on tuesday too.

44? Thats 111F in old money. Are you sure your thermometer is working properly? What ever it is it sounds rotten though, I hope she feels better quickly.

oops sorry.
It was 104.8 for most of the night tuesday.
I'm on F so didn't get it right.
Now it's around 102, 103 so actually just under 40.

(Everyone has been converting it to C and I've been taking it in F so I was a bit muddled. I haven't been converting for them though...)

Still too high for my liking. I used to think 102 -103 was high but now it's just settled here.

That is very high (but rather more likely ) you must have been pretty worried. poor kid. did the gp give to a time frame to go back if shes not improving? (if it were me I'd take her back if she goes down hill again, or if she is not improving by Monday)

There have been a number of other threads on this. My dd had high fever after vaccine as well. Out of hours GP adamant it was swine flu not vaccine. Got tamiflu. But according to paediatrician it was side effect of the vaccine and he had seen other cases, including himself and his own family. This was all fever around 39 degrees celcius (not above 40 degrees though) Hope she is better now. At least I suppose she doesn't need a second vaccine at her age or does she?

sweetgrapes · 05/12/2009 19:49

She is supposed to have a second dose of the vaccine in 3 weeks time.

She has been better today. Still a fever but not high and she started eating and talking and playing a little.

My friends child had this, was then prescribed tamiflu (they didnt think she had caught sf from the vaccine but that it was coinceidntal)
