Does this sound like it could be a kidney infection?

I've had a generalised stomach ache for a couple of weeks that has come and gone, but hasn't been too painful. I thought it was muscular at first.

Last night I started to get a temperature but felt very shivery with it, needed a wee more than usual. The pain has localised to my sides, mainly on the right, radiating slightly round to the back where my kidneys are. It's really quite sore and I feel hot and shivery and have no appetite, feel a bit sick.

Is this likey to be a virus or an infection? I am going to the walk in centre tonight (dh at work until 7 and I don't drive) but don't know if they can help if it is an infection.

It could well be, I had vague back/side pains for about a week before I had an obvious infection. The walk in centre should be able to give you AB's if necessary, take a wee sample with you and they can test it on the spot. Make sure you drink plenty.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you. How exactly do you transport a urine sample? I'm looking at my best china and not liking the idea...

You can buy a container from any chemist, usually about 60p.

It does sound like it could be a kidney infection and they can treat them. I seem to remember being on tablets for about 3 weeks, but perhaps it just seemed that long because I couldn't drink

Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you. I can't get to a chemist's. I live in the middle of nowhere and don't drive.

I might have to see if dh can get one.

You can actually use any container if you've got something suitable to hand. don't think they're that fussy

Lapsedrunner · 04/12/2009 16:38

You have my sympathy, I have something very similar (without temperature) and have Dr appointment in the morning.

KurriKurri · 04/12/2009 16:40

Any container will do, they just need to dip a strip in it. A jam jar would do.

ShowOfHands · 04/12/2009 16:43

I've just phoned dh who works in the city and he's nipping to the chemist for a sample pot thingy. I'll keep the jam jar tip for future reference!

Good luck Lapsedrunner for tomorrow. It's miserable isn't it?

Thank you for your help. It is a kidney infection. Have antibiotics which I'm about to start another thread about. How did I make decisions before MN?
