Never had my ears syringed, but I do have constant terrible Tinitus, so can appreciate that for you. I hope it doesn't last too long for you. It is a real blight

mumof2000 · 04/12/2009 14:41

thanks , im hoping it will settle down in a few days ,
is the tinitus long term thing ?

I think people have it for different lengths of time. Mine used to be intermittent, but is now constant and it interfers with my hearing sadly. Hopefully yours wont be a permanent thing though.

Pheebe · 04/12/2009 15:56

Slight thread hijack here but I have tinitus too - constant pulsatile tinitus that is also starting to interfere with my hearing . Solo have you gone down the hearing aid route yet?

SolosScrapingUpForXmas · 04/12/2009 16:07

I haven't Pheebe. My Doc said there was nothing that could be done. I find that I if I'm surrounded by noise that I can't 'zone in' on someone that is talking to me. I end up trying to lip read. Also if someones voice is acertain pitch, I can't hear the sound that is their voice if that makes sense?
Have you tried aids then? any luck?

Pheebe · 04/12/2009 16:47

I'm exactly the same. Apparently I have hypersensitive hearing too which means I get overwhelmed if there's alot of 'noise' (great with 2 small kids!). Consultant said that hearing aids helps some people but I wasn't 'bad' enough to warrant one when I saw him 3 years ago. My next step is to go back and see what he suggests as I'm really struggling to hear somedays and DH is even starting to notice. Its awful isn't it

Mumof2000 - just spoke to my mum as I remember her being almost deaf with wax a few years ago. She said she had tinnitus for a while after they syringed her ears out and everything sounded really loud all of a sudden. She said it settled down after a week or so and the tinnitus went too. Hope that helps

mumof2000 · 04/12/2009 17:06

Thanks pheebe , thanks for asking your mum , glad hers got better in time ,hope mine do to , early days at moment as only had it done thismorning ..
my ears were blocked for 3 days full of wax as put drops in and it moved it all about , now i can here a bit better but when im sitting here no noise around me all i here is this annoying ringing ..... plus i really thought everything would be alot clearer .... still got that funny muffled thing with the ears , dont get me wrong it is a bit better , and when i eat i can still hear every chew i have ...

i guess i will just have to give it time ..

Is really is awful Pheebe. Mine was made a lot worse when Dd was born. She screamed 24/7 I was tearing my hair out and it didn't get any better from there.

I can't hear the priest at Sunday mass anymore unless I'm right next to a loud speaker! and it's unusual to get that close, so I end up switching off, which is a bit sad...
Do you find yourself tilting your head toward the person you're trying to hear? I feel like saying 'speak into my ear' or write it down please!

Is yours a ringing or a buzz? mine rings. It's like having those little metal bells in your head. Jingle bloody bells!

SolosScrapingUpForXmas · 04/12/2009 17:14

Hope it goes soon mumof2000.

Hi Solo
Sorry I didn't post sooner, busy weekend here. I have a really high pitched squeal in both ears, I've had that as long as I can remember and it doesn't really bother me. Since DS1 was born I've had pulsatile tinitus in one ear (imagine shushushushushu) constantly and rhythmically day and night. They ruled out anything nasty like an aneurysm or tumour fortunately (v scary time!) My consultant told me to protect my hearing as much as possibl- avoid loud noises, earphones etc and not to go to the cinema too often. If I understood him right he said if my normal hearing gets worse, the tinitus will seem worse.
I'm definitely going to make an appointment this week. He mentioned the possibility of hearing aids but also some sort of counseling to help me cope with/ignore it. I'll keep you posted in case anything is useful to you. Have you seen an ENT?
phee

have you been taking ibuprofen or any anti inflammatories?

mumof2000 · 06/12/2009 11:12

mumof2000 don't take my story to mean there could be anything worrysome for you. The reason I got all the tests was because its just in one ear and is pulsatile. Actually almost everyone has tinitus apparently. it just doens't bother most people. Like I said I;ve always had squeals in my ears and that doesn't bother me.

I'm sure yours will settle down in a few days as your ears get used to a 'normal' level of sound rather than listening through a great plug of wax.

You could always take a look at the british tinnitus website too.

No need to health anxiety

mumof2000 · 06/12/2009 19:53

Thanks pheebe , i know, just my anx can get out of control at times , i never had his ringing before i had wax removed so i guess all to do with that really , will give it a few days to settle .

hope your ears better than it was .x

Hi Pheebe, no I've never been to ENT. I first got the ringing when I was about 17, but it was on and off and never really bothered me. I have it all the time now and it doesn't 'bother' me exactly, it's the hearing problems that I have now with it that get to me although it occasionally gets louder and that does bother me.

Maybe I'll go see the doctor again.

HH365 · 11/12/2009 00:06

Hi, Im afraid you could have tinnitus. Tinnitus is an awful condition that can drive a person nuts. Constant ringing, whooshing, whistling, high pitch and other type noises in either or both ears.

See your doc asap. It could be temporary and may go away with any luck. there are devices called white noise generators can mask the sound that the tinnitus makes. There is a great deal of information on this condition out there, try www.tinnitus.org
