Contraception: IUS Vs IUD, What tipped the balance in favour of either?

Ok, I never thought that I would be asking this question considering how long and how much clomid it took me to conceive my child but, we are not in a position to bring another child into the world and can not trust our previous bad luck to keep the things the way they are.

I have been reviewing different contraception methods and I'm inclined to go for a IUS or a IUD. According to the NHS there are different advantages and disadvantages for both but, at the moment, the decision seems to be based in two options:

IUS: My terrible migraines may come back

IUD: Having mood swings as a secondary effect may tip me over the edge (metaphorically speaking). I'm having a horrendously stressful time at the moment so I'm not sure is a good idea to add mood swing and heavier periods/menstrual pain to that.

There are many other methods, which I have reviewed but at the moment, given my circumstances and medical history, it seems to be between the 2 above.

From you experience, which one may you suggest and why?

TIA

I'm not sure what IUS and IUD are, but I have a copper coil, and chose it because I didn't want the mood/libido changing effects of a hormone-based contraceptive. I also won't take the pill because I suffer from migraine and want to avoid the increased stroke risk. It's fine, except that periods are heavier and more painful. If you get one, maybe think about getting a mooncup too to avoid leaking incidents.

I see, I have an IUD not an IUS.

Hi Mongolia,

I have a copper coil(IUD) so can give you my opinion on that. Never had a Mirena(IUS) so can't comment.

I find it very convenient, it has made my period heavier and little more painful but thats offset by the ease and convenience of it.

I'm assuming that the mood swings you get are from your period so aren't really directly related to the coil? If thats the case I think its best to address the mood swings as a separate issue to contraception.

Lots of women take evening primose oil or star flower oil or a combination of both to help with PMT, would you consider those?

Thank you.

It is all very confusing. As I said I worry about the migraines but more than that I worry about the mood swings that are mentioned in the copper coil info.

As users of the copper coil... have you felt you had acquired some extra mood swings you didn't have before then?

I may need perhaps to start another thread calling them Copper Vs mirena coil... as I believe that my current thread title may be somewhat a bit obscure.

I didn't know anything about mood swings with an IUD- are you sure you have got it right?
Mood swings possibly wiht IUs as there is a hormone too, but not just the IUD.

I have a copper coil (IUD). I am very happy with it, on my second one. I had had enough of hormones with the pill/minipill, mainly libido issues.

My periods are heavier, but no more painful. I take tranexamic acid to make them lighter. I still get PMT, but that is down to my own hormones and no-one elses. And I feel sexy...

good luck with your decision... Cass
