Just wondered if there are any others out there who, like me, are loosing their hair.....

It's crept up on me...I had a few weeks of thinking if my hair was getting thinner and then have noticed for sure that I am loosing too much especially when I wash my hair.

I went to the drs and tbh they weren't so interested. They checked my thyroid and although the level is borderline underactive, they weren't willing to do anything even though hairloss and a few of the other symptoms I have been having mean there could be a problem on the way. It was only because I said I wamted another child that they agreed finally to put me on thyroid medication. I feel better since taking it but I still am loosing too much hair.

Feeling depressed at the thought of Christmas and seeing relatives I haven't seen for a while. You can really see that I am thin on top as I have dark hair I also really need it cut but I don't really wanr to go to the hairdressers.

Sorry to ramble on about myself. Would like to chat to any other ladies out there whose hair is falling out...I can't be the only one?

Hi ladies iv been experiencing hair loss since my late teens but after having my boys its almost gone on top altogether i usually wear something like a bandana or a really wide hairband as all you'd see otherwise was the top of my head with a few wisps flyin around... My g.p has twice dismissed it sayin it will start to grow back around 2years post preg/giving birth etc etc i had been thinking about trying regain or something along those lines when i stopped bf but we'v decided to start ttc dc3 in the spring so it will have to hold... Does anyone know if any of them actually work cause they r quite costly

I've been shedding hair at an alarming rate the past 2 years.

Thinning all over - I'd say I have about a 1/5 of what it was.

I touch/style/wash it and I lose a handful.

Had blood tests - iron/thyroid as normal.

Saw an endocrinologist who assured me that even though I was losing head hair, but suffering with excess facial/body hair, that I wasn't turning into a man.

Saw a dermatologist - who recommended Head & Shoulders (which left my scalp burning).

Don't know where to turn next. GP referred me to dermatology again, but, what can they do?!

Extremely self-conscious about it, but putting on a brave face and getting on. Inside is a very different matter.

My DP and I want to try for a baby soon and I don't know if/how this will effect things.

I've heard of women having a biopsy of scalp. Has anyone had one - if so, what were the results?

Do you gals find that shedding increases at certain times of the year?

RantApplause · 16/12/2009 21:28

I can't believe I stumbled on this thread. I'm so glad it's not just me. I have been really worried about this over the last few months.

I'm not getting patches and I can't really see a difference when I have washed and dried but it's coming out in scary handfuls in the shower and when I brush. I only wash it every other day now because it gets so brittle and dry if I wash it daily. Could it be that I'm still having the natural daily loss (they say about 100-150 a day I think) but it looks like more because I'm only seeing every other day?

Hi
I have only just come back to this thread.
Thanks very much for replying Knickers. It's good to know that there are "options" available for when it starts to look really bad.
It's such a sensitive issue that not many people talk about.

Hi all wux re. Pregnancy my g.p told me a woman's hair usually looks thicker while preg as we dont tend to loose as much hair due to all the lovely bubbling hormones but then shed loads once baba arrives

bandgeek · 17/12/2009 01:52

I lost a lot of hair earlier on this year,it was coming out in clumps when I was or brushed it, but there weren't any bald patches. I think in my case it was over-processing as my hair was dyed blonde and I straightened it a lot. I've went dark again and it is in much better conditionn now.

My DS, who is 4, lost 80% of his hair at the start of the year. Doctor said it was tellugen effluvium, and it was the scariest thing as it all came it out within a week! It did grow back and it is as thick as ever again. It's a horrible thing, and really knocks your self-confidence

Wuxiapian · 17/12/2009 20:31

Hmm, poohbear...

That all depends on if I have any hair to start with, I guess...

webchick · 19/12/2009 21:36

I had my blood tests back & ferritin levels are v low my thyroid & all other bloods were fine so he's prescribed 3 x 200mg iron tablets for 2 months then I'll get retested.

Whilst I can see it's good they've found something I'm now stressing as to whether the iron supplements will start working & that my hair just stops falling out. I'm impatient about it. Also he thinks the main reason for my low levels is because my period lasts approx 6 days & my body doesn't recover in time before it's my next cycle.

I dread washing/brushing my hair these days & am constantly picking loose hair off my clothes. Also, since it's been cold the last few days I really notice my head & neck being chilly so am wearing hats all the time.

Finally I found a link to a specialist hair loss salon in Hammersmith which I've seen on eg 10 years younger etc. I'm thinking on phoning them up on Mon & ask them a few Qs about my hair.

Thanks to all posters it's good to read everyones stories.

Webchick, I started shedding my hair a lot a few years ago until it ended up very wispy indeed.

I went to the doctor several times and he did blood tests. He couldn't find anything wrong other than slightly low ferritin levels. He said that if I wanted, I could go to a dermatologist at the local hospital (not on the NHS, of course). Almost as a last resort, he put me on iron tablets. They took a while to work, but eventually my hair started to grow back. I think I was on them for four months, but I am not totally sure, could be as many as six.

Now I am not on the iron tablets, he advised me to eat lots of iron rich foods to keep my levels up. I haven't been to him for over a year, because he doesn't know why it is actually falling out, so what is the point? Also, last time I went he mentioned if it was still falling out, investigating my bowels . I take a natural iron supplement daily now because I find it a much easier.

I suppose it has taken about 2 years to almost be as thick as it was before. I still shed a lot of hair but at least I grow new to replace it. I do nothing to it now, though. I wash it every other day, leave it to dry naturally if possible, only brush it if it looks wild. I have a dry cut at the hairdressers now because I could not face having it washed there and loads coming out. Its also a lot shorter than it used to be as when it was at its wispiest, it looked worse when it was long.

Obviously, this just worked for me, but you never know, it might work for you, too. I know its hard and I was impatient too, but it might be worth giving the iron tablets a few months before phoning a specialist salon.

Reading these stories does make you realise you are not the only one, but I don't think people know how awful it is.

Wuxiapian · 23/12/2009 23:07

Had a haircut last night, from bra-strap length to shoulder.

Hoping it'll make the problem less obvious.

How do you all have yours?

webchick · 11/01/2010 14:32

It's been a few weeks since I last posted, just to say I've been on iron tablets, taking a vitamin C supplement, and trying a multi-vitamin called "Hair care" which has Vit B1, B2 etc and my hair has stopped falling out which is good news. I've also been eating as high a protein diet as I can with lots of eggs, wholemeal bread for breakfast and chicken and vegetables for lunch and evening meal.

I'll wait a few more weeks until I have my blood re-tested and see what the doctos says. Perhaps I'll see regrowth in another few weeks if this carries on, fingers crossed.

Hello everyone,

I have been reading this thread and touched how you all help each other out.

I am actually a journalist, for Sunday Times Style magazine, and I look after the column, What It Feels Like. I am looking to write about the experience of alopecia and to explore the emotions that come with it. It's a very sensitive, sympathetic column that most people find a very therapeutic, cathartic experience. If anyone would be happy to talk to me (anonymously, if preferred), please check out my post
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/media_nonmember_requests/892502-Alopecia-post-childbirth

As I say, the aim is to uncover what it feels like to go through such a trauma, and to bring awareness to it.
thanks!
