Thrush on 8 month old's bottom

My 8 month dd keeps suffering from recurrent thrush on her bottom. We have been prescribed daktarin to apply when she has it which helps but then within a few days of not using it it comes back. We were advised by the Doctor to use it for a few days after the bumps disappeared which we did but it is still coming back. I don't like using this stuff all the time as it makes her skin quite dry. Does anyone have any suggestions? What could be causing it? Should we change anything in her diet? Does yoghurt really work? BTW dd wears terry nappies. Could it be something to do with not washing them properly? Sorry for all the questions but we're stumped.

Had the same thing with DD. Try 1% canesten and really slather it on at every nappy change (get it on prescription for a bigger tube). Don't stop the terries (also a "real" nappy fan), but you might let her go nappy free for a while if you can, change her frequently, or put her in a sposie at night for a few days until it clears up (buy the moltex okos from littlegreenearthlets.com to continue feeling environmental, as we did ) as unforunately, it's the old warm damp conditions which excacerbate the condition. I am prone to it now, and was also as a baby unfortunately, so I guess DD is too. Good luck!

Just realised I've called the cream 'daktarin' instead of 'daktacort'. Isn't daktarin a character in something!!!

Thanks snickers for the reply. We're going on holiday in a couple of days where she will be wearing disosables for the whole time. This will no doubt clear it but then I know as soon as we come back and she wears her terries again it will come back. How can we stop it for good or is this impossible?

Anyone else got any suggestions?

I'd keep using the cream for longer than a few days after the infection looks like it's gone - altho your doc should be able to tell you if that's Ok with the cream you have. When ds had this more or less everywhere and also infected me I used it for ages afterwards cos I was so paranoid! Well about 10 days anyway. Could you try something else instead? I had daktarin for oral thrush and for other skin thrush but not for nappy rash - I'll try and remember what I used if you like.
Are you washing the nappies on a really hot wash or could you even boil them to be sure? Or if you are going away and not using them for a while they might be OK anyway - not sure how long it can live without a warm bum!
Could it be irritated by the nappy liner? I heard that fleece can cause this prob altho ds is OK with it
Are you sure she doesn't have it anywhere else? I'm on very shaky ground here but I know my ds was just infested with the nasty stuff and it was lurking in the back of his throat and stomach. This didn't cause more nappy rash though - but lots of thrushy nipple probles for me breastfeeding.
Run out of ideas - sorry - but good luck and don't give up - it can be a b*er to get rid of but you'll get there!

Hi Debster
My dd had the same problem for a bit - we used canasten cream which woked quickly. But reoccuring was a problem too. Just keep using it and you could try soaking the cloth nappies in a bit of vinegar - it kills thrush apparently. Agree to change often and keep as dry as poss. Hang in there its a stubborn little thng (It drove me CARZY!).

Thanks guys. Looks like we're going to have to stick at it. Hopefully wearing disposables for a couple of weeks will give the terries a chance to recover! Anyway off on hols on Sunday so am not going to worry too much.

Don't want to upset anyone (!!) but if disposables clear it up why not just use eco-friendly disposables such as Moltex? My ds shares a nanny with a little lad who suffers torments with nappy rash and wears terries. I know this certainly doesn't affect all 'real' nappy wearers but I always think this particular boy looks miserable with his poor little bottom.

Hi I run Baby Gaia, a not for profit organisation, we run a washable NAPPY LIBRARY for parents on low income, and sell nappies.Natural Bio Yoghurt, straight onto the area where the thrush is located, worked for me when my daughter had it.Also, children or adults can get thrush when they have had antibiotics, has your child had any recently? You might also try 1 tblspn of Nappy Fresh from Bio-D,a biodegraedable, non chlorine bleach in your detergent drawer with your detergent,or in the bucket with your soaking nappies. This actively gets rid of all the bacteria in the nappies. If you don't want to use any chemicals, you could use 1 tblspn of bicarbonate of soda, or 3 tblspns of white vinegar in your soaking bucket of nappies, before washing.Alternatively, you could wash the nappies(not the wraps) at 90 degrees, to boil them.Although this last method is not particularly good for the environment. If you would like any further advice, please contact me at:[email protected]
