'Dislocated' wrist while I was asleep, is this normal?

Last night about 9.30 I was asleep, (this is normal for me!) and I suddenly woke up in extreme pain - I actually screamed in my sleep - and found my wrist was out of place. It was as though I had lain on it in a funny way, perhaps, what it felt like in my mind was that there were two parts of it laterally, and they had somehow separated - like one half had fallen away from the other. I think that was just my weird visualisation in my dream, but anyway it was agonising if I tried to move it and I was totally panicked.

I tried to ring NHS direct but they were very busy and I gave up. Within about 10 minutes it seemed to ease itself back to its usual position so I went back to bed.

I was really shaking and scared at the time as it seemed so weird to have managed that in my sleep. It's fine this morning, just a bit sore, but I'm worried in case it indicates some pathological problem. I did have borderline osteoporosis a few years back after I was anorexic for several years, but never broke anything and was told that my bones ought to re-thicken with my menstrual cycles returning. So haven't been too worried.

Looked on google and there are lots of hits about rheumatoid arthrisits - but I never have pain normally. I think the term for what happened is 'subluxation' not dislocation as it wasn't fully out iyswim.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Do you sleep with your hand under your head? This could put strain on your wrist. Go and see the doctor - it could be a problem with the tendons rather then the bones themselves.

Thankyou for answering...I don't think I do, and its never happened before...but saying that I do sleep on my side.

I might talk to the Dr and ask if I need to come in...it seems a bit pointless to see him if it's back to normal! Though he could refer couldn't he.

Do you carry lots of heavy things? I remember when my baby was born, holding him all the time that my wrist became so painful.

Hmm not really...obviously there is the usual shopping and stuff, but it's never caused problems before.

I am getting OLD aren't I.

Oh wow, really? Thank goodness I'm not going to fall to bits.

I don't think I am hypermobile though. I did have some spd-type issues when pregnant but nothing terrible.

Ok eill avoid doing erm, that, I think...tricky though, I will feel out of place at parties if I can't do the old fist-in-mouth trick like everyone else
