Hi ladies,

I have just had the results of my biopsy and been told I have CIN1 (which they reassure me are mild changes) and they will be in touch to arrange appt to see consultant.

Now, my real worry here is that everywhere I read I see an association between CIN and the HPV virus, I have not slept with anybody other than my husband (7 years) so does anybody know if you can have these changes without the virus?

Thanks.

I think it's possible, but isn't it the case that only some changes are caused by the HPV?
Also, your DH can be a carrier depending on who he has slept with- it doesn't have to be many.

The changes are caused by HPV and it's less likely to due to something else but inflammation can also cause changes which look quite similar to CIN1. H
PV is can be transmitted by skin to skin contact and doesn't need to have been intercourse. This means as peony says that either of you could have had it for years. The CIN1 may also have been present for some time, and just sat there, hasn't resolved itself but hasn't progressed.
The NHS CSP website has info about HPV and HPV testing, as does the colposcopists' site.
These are all questions that your consultant should be able to answer, and more importantly, they know all your history etc, I hope they are able to give you reassurance.
