Need help, to coil or not to coil????

that is the question???

Ok I've been on combined pill since I was 18 (am 31 now) but since having my lovely children I'm finding hormonal contraceptives don't appear to suit me. I can't deal with combined pill, had to have Implanon taken out due to year long severe bleeding and recently had Mirena taken out due to constant bleeding and migraines (never had before)

Dr gave me Cezarette but tbh I've been a horrible cow to all and sundry since then. Am now considering copper coil as I'm wary of hormonal contraceptives now and I'm not keen on condoms.

I'd like to know if it's possible to become intolerant to hormonal contraceptives and is the copper coil actually any good??

I've just swapped to a copper coil for the same sort of reasons. No problems so far, it's working out fine for me. You can only try, I suppose.

I had a copper coil and while of course it has the advantage of having no hormonal input (which sounds like it would be good for you) be aware that it can cause heavy periods.

My blood count dropped so low (7) I couldn't run for more than 5 mins (I am normally a confortable 5k runner) and I was soooo tired. I am sure the coil was the reason as since I have had mirena it has not been a problem.

It's annoying isn't it that there is no realistic alternative to hormonal contraceptives - I find the mirena while not making me grumpy seems to cause me to put on weight (tho it may just be that I am a fat pig ).

You've just asked a question that I'd like the answer to as well. Post DD I've found the mini pill makes me feel far too & am also considering the coil.

I've just had a copper coil fitted. I can keep you posted on what it's like.

The fitting was no problem.

I did think i will take a multi vitamin with iron though if my periods are to get heavier.

Thank you for replies thus far. I'm just so sick and tired of worrying about contraception and I want something that's reliable and doesn't turn me into Freddie Krueger's ugly sister every time something goes wrong.

The rate I'm going with the hormonal issues on the Cerazette dh is seriously considering getting me an exorcism for Christmas (and I really would prefer a nice Liz Earle set!)

Any other opinions greatly received, are copper coils reliable??

I had a copper coil between DD1 and DD2. Ended up taking it out after 16mths. First 8mths were fine but from then on I just ended up with repeated bacterial vaginosis and thrush infections, neither of which I'd previously suffered from. Dr and I couldn't come up with any other reasons for them so I got it taken out. Had one further episode of thrush when pg but nothing else since it came out 2+ yrs ago. As for bleeding etc. it was medium to heavy but that is how I remember I used to be pre-pill days as a teenager.

Clary · 29/11/2009 23:04

Oh yes I used to get thrush a lot too.

Not had it for a while, I had forgotten that. Never thought of coil as cause but maybe...
