The strongest painkiller you can buy is Paramol I believe, or Co-codamol (Paracetamol + Dihydrocodine) but shingles pain can be pretty bad and maybe you can get something stronger prescribed by Doc on Monday after trying these for the weekend?

Poor you - hope it feels better soon.

I take prescription co-codamol

But I know someone currently in hospital on morphine & acupuncture for her shingles

Can you go to the out-of-hours or walk-in for stronger painkillers?

noddyholder · 28/11/2009 11:44

I think I may have to.Never known pain like this!

If you are not allowed ibuprofen you usually shouldn't take aspirin either as they are similar.

Strongest pain relief from chemist is cocodamol or paramol.

Shingles pain can be difficult to manage though, see GP for something ideally. It is nerve pain so paracetamol etc don't always help, you may need specialist medication for nerve pain, like gabapentin.

im a nurse BTW

brimfull · 28/11/2009 11:51

was also going to say gabapentin for nerve pain
poor you-ouch!

noddyholder · 28/11/2009 11:55

Are you allowed acyclovir for the shingles?

noddyholder · 28/11/2009 12:03

Yes have had it before but they weren't 100% agreed on shingles as no rash but I have had it before and am sure as is one of the docs.

Poor Noddy - it sounds awful - I didn't know you could get shingles more than once

noddyholder · 28/11/2009 16:37

Thanks!I have been on the sofa all day Have paracetomol and codeine and it hasn't done anything.Have phoned hospital but don't hold much hope of getting anything else before monday.

ok - what you need to try is a TENS machine. Can you borrow one from someone or get to boots or tesco to hire one?

It helped with my mum's shingle pain and her bone cancer pain - nothing else even touched it.

noddyholder · 30/11/2009 13:09

I have been given tramadol and gabapentin today as it is def shingles.Am terrified to take either!

Anyone have experience of gabapentin? How drowsy will i be!?

OP posts:
colditz · 30/11/2009 19:07

it is uniquely painful, isn't it? Mine is on a relatively inoffensive region on my back. I take paracetamol and nurofen for it, but if I could take co-codamol, I would.

stinkypinky · 30/11/2009 19:15

Amitryptylline is good for this. Dad had it recently at age 79, and this helped.
Hope you soon find relief

noddyholder · 30/11/2009 19:55

Thanks I have tried the tramadol and it was ok but only took the edge off.Am nervous about the gabapentin in case it knocks me right out!Codeine doesn't work.It is a unique pain colditz I have never had anything so severe
