My 16 year old son had it at end of October, last day of term actually. He went to college that day but complained about a sore throat. He had been saying all week that he felt tired but you know what kids that age are like to get to bed early so I didn't think anything of it and maybe it wasn't linked. Anyway when he got home from college he was so ill. His throat was really bad, he said his back and knees hurt, he had the cough and a runny nose and a temperature of 102.2. I rang the gps they said swine flu and because he's asthmatic gave him Tamiflu. I gave him the first tamiflu followed by 2 paracetamol as gp said to give him them to get his temperature down but he vomited them back up. It was a nightmare for about 3 days in all. Temperature rose to about 104 and he kept on vomiting the paracetamol up. Mind you they say that the tamiflu can make you vomit especially when taking the first one or two doses. Only way I could keep his temperature down a bit was putting a big electric fan near him and cold sponges. I slept on the floor for 3 nights next to his bed as he really worried me. I was fortunate I didn't catch it but did get just a cold. Hope this has helped if anything.

Sorry forgot to add that he slept and slept for 2 days solid. He didn't want anything to eat either and if he did eat anyting he brought it back up. He did start to pick up by the 3rd day but he rested and started to eat light foods like boiled eggs, soup etc. He was gutted because he was ill over half term and as he's very susceptible to colds it left him with a sinus infection the following week.

thanks for that, i wonder if everyone has such a high temp, as i have heard of a few people that had the swine flu without the temp????

hi there me and DP had it back in July. The main symptomewe both had in common was that it started with a very sore throat for a few days before - really painful but didnt lose your voice. He didnt get much more than that, just felt a bit knackered wheras I got the full works - temp (tho not that high - 39o), shakes, aches and pains, vomitting (but only twice), runs and really bad headaches - basically just like a normal bad flu but with maybe an extra element of feeling really, really nauseous and sick and fatigued for a week or so. I also got a secondary chest infection at the end which took awhile to shift with antibiotics, I don't normally get chest problems and was very healthy beforehand. Ever since I have been very post-viral- tired, run down, keep getting infections etc. Been a bit of a nightmare actually, thank you for letting me moan about it here.

Tiredmumno1 · 26/11/2009 21:08

At least that proves the symptoms in everyone are not the same, and we dont mind ya having a moan .

We (family of 4) have just come out the other side of this. Only one of us - DS 2.5yrs - was officially diagnosed by doc and his symptoms were the worst but I suspect all 4 of us have had touches of it.
He had extreme lethargy (lasted a full week), loss of appetite and then classic high fever 38.5 forcthree days on and off. Cough got deep and chesty after 3 days and still bad although well otherwise now 9 days later. No sickness with Tamiflu, think he got it a bit late if am honest.
Rest of us have had catalogue of sore throats, ongoing sneezing with no proper cold, fatigue but not so much we are unable to press on, dizziness and headaches. Weirdly the 5 mth old DD has not gone down as badly as DS despite being very closely salivated over on an ongoing basis before, during and since DS' contamination period- perhaps the rest of us had more natural resistence???

fabhead · 26/11/2009 21:16

yes and we both definitely had it as were tested - bizarre that he got it so mildly (bastard!)

The really sore throat seems to be the symptom that everyone that I know has had.

My 3 dc have it at the moment, high temp, headache, 2 with sore throat, vomitting, stomach pain, sneezing and coughing.

It came on very quickly, esp in dd(5), but the worst of it is only lasting 2 days, dd got it on monday, and was up playing and eating this evening. She gave us a scare on monday night, she was delerious and we had to sponge her down to get her temp down.

My 2 boys are asthmatic, and I was very worried, but we have been so lucky, and have only had to use the nebuliser once, in the middle of last night for ds2, othervise we have been using inhalers to control the cough.

Dr didn't suggest tamiflu and we didn't need it, combination of paracetemol, ibuprofen, motilium and cough medicine have been enough.

Ds1 got is on tues and is definately on the mend, ds2 is still fairly poorly, but I'm hoping tomorrow will be better for him.

For us it was a short, sharp shock and I'm very relieved we have gotten away lightly.

facebookaddict · 26/11/2009 21:30

Verity- heart goes out to you. 3 to worry about and all sounds v scary. Glad they are all the mend

lavenderkate · 26/11/2009 21:42

we all got it back in July.

Sore throats to start, headaches, tired and aching limbs. You know when you have climbed the stairs and need to sit down for a minute.

Everyone had a temp of 38.5c no more.
Dry cough. Tickled the throat and drove me nuts. But really tight chest, I imagine how athmatics feel.

I got the Tamiflu and that made me feel sick, not the virus itself. The children didnt have it .

3yr old was on sofa for a few days a bit limp. 13 year old took the longest to get strength back at about 7 days.

Lots of other families were exactly the same.

I would say that for us, it was nowhere near as bad as some of the Winter Viruses we have all had in the past.

VerityBrulee · 26/11/2009 21:42

Thanks, facebook, we are all planning a treat for next week

facebookaddict · 26/11/2009 21:49

Make sure you don't have too much activity too quickly. Think the post viral fatigue is pretty bad IMO given the recovery of my usually energetic bundle who has clocked up hours and hours of tv that he usually hates as he's been too knackered to eat or play. Good luck.

OP- if in doubt get tamiflu. After onset with mine, close friend obtained half heartedly for her boy( who plays with mine) and gave even though she was unsure. He's def benefited and has since had more symptoms but all low level and she's glad she got it.
