Asthma and cat allergy

Are most asthmatics affected by cats? and dogs?

My 6.5yr dd is asthmatic and is going through quite a bad patch at the moment and eveyone is telling me its the cat. She doesn't seem to be affected when she's playing with him but she does spend a lot of time playing and fussing him.

Am I making her asthma worse by keeping the cat and could my dog (yorkie) also be part of the problem?

I will be heartbroken to lose my pets but I'm reluctantly thinking that they have a role to play in dd1's asthma.

I am asthmatic and cannot be anywhere near cats, literally. If i visit someone who has cats within about 10 minutes my throat starts to swell up and itch, I start sneezing non-stop and eventually I have a full blown asthma attack.
I grew up with cats with seemingly no problem but the problem seems to sometimes start for people after having had a cat and then had a significant (for me it was when I moved out) period without them somehow. It seems to trigger an exaggerated immune response. Now I cannot tolerate my mums cats or be in her house without taking piriton and using my inhaler. If I stroke a cat and touch my lips, eyelids or tongue they swell up and my eyes start watering and turn red. I don't seem to have the same problem with dogs though.

I read somewhere that it isn't the animal, its the mites that live on their fur. I think in the case of asthmatics it should be taken very seriously; once my dads cat gave me such a severe attack (despite the fact that it wasn't allowed in) I had to go to hospital!

Sigh... but I still love cats though. It's unfair that I can't have one.

I'm ok with cats but I react to some dogs.

Ladygooga, how is she?

If she came home from school worse than she went, is there maybe a trigger at school?

Hope shes ok.

Thanks for asking. She's a lot better today. although I'm furious with the school.
She was crying and asking to go home, very unlike dd1 and was wheezing with an obvious temp. Nobody called me and they still sent her outside in the cold at break time despite me asking for her to be kept in.

Last night her temp reached 40.6c! I was so worried. Fortunately she is a lot better today and waiting for an allergy test to be done.

Also told dh her carpet needs to be changed for laminate which might help.

40.6!! Omg, poor wee thing . I'd be furious at the school!

Although they once did a similar thing with ds1, and I complained. Now they go overboard and call me when one of my boys so much as sneeze

Hope you get the tests soon.

I'm too angry to talk to the school today tbh, I'll wait til monday when I've calmed down a bit.

If they have carpets at school that could be part of the problem, they are probably never hoovered with a decent one.
