Do you think a GP would prescribe the pill to a child who has a phobia about blood?

The phobia is extreme and the child vomits and panics at anything the looks remotely like blood.

Are you talking about a pubescent girl and having the pill to deal with the onset of periods?

CMOTdibbler · 25/11/2009 10:30

I'd hope that the GP would refer the child for help with the phobia, rather than prescribe the pill tbh

It's my DD. She's 11 and hasn't started yet, but I wondered if she couldn't cope when she starts if this would help.

Poor girl just has to get over this. She is going to menstruate every month for the next 30 years or more. Therapy sounds pretty much essential to me. CBT is excellent for phobias, ime.

claricebeansmum · 25/11/2009 10:32

I would sincerely hope not. As CMOT says - deal with the phobia. There are health implications for taking the pill especially over long periods of time.

posieparker · 25/11/2009 10:33

CBT is the way forward. Stopping periods is really not a good idea full stop let alone in a girl just starting her periods.

gorionine · 25/11/2009 10:36

I am pretty sure I was still having a periode when taking the pill. Was told to take for 21 days, 1 week break and so on. It would mean that she never stops taking it would it? Is that good?

I tend to agree with CMOTdibbler.

cocolepew · 25/11/2009 10:39

She is starting therapy next week, she is suffering from severe anxiety and suicidal thoughts. She has 'visions' of herself lying in pools of blood. So maybe, hopefully, it will help her phobia as well.

It must be so hard for her and for yourself. I really feel for both of you.

moocowme · 25/11/2009 20:22

i do believe if she has an extreme phobia and treatment is not making a complete difference then yes she could be considered for the pill as at least that way she can be in control of when it happens.

if she is being seen by a psyciatrist they may well order a full blood test as some problems such as thyroid disease at a young age can cause anxiety issues. but she has to have the blood test first. even without any other treatment CBT is good.
