Yet another ear infection, am losing my hearing, any suggestions?

I have recurrant ear infections, this has got worse over the last year or so.
The last one gave me a perforated ear drum after my gp insisted it was viral and refused antibiotics. I ended up at the out of hours centre being given some heavy duty antibiotics.

My hearing is really deteriorating, I have noticed that I am lipreading more in situations where there is a lot of background noise, I went out on saturday night with friends to see a band and ended up laughing when everyone else laughed without having a clue what they were on about as I just couldn't make out any conversation. This was in the interval by the way. when the band was playing i doubt if anyone could hear...

My biggest difficulty is with lower registers I think. I have to turn the radio up loud to hear male voices, lower ones are a background buzz almost.

This ear infection is nasty, I have ulcers down the same side of my tongue as the infected ear and it is in my throat as well.
I'm trying to get my gp to see me, he has just told me on the phone (again) that it sounds viral. I know from experience that it isn't.
So, does anyone have any experience, can you recommend anything to do to help with this?

Am really fed up, dp doesn't really understand how horrid it is, I think he thinks I ambeing dramatic. I'm really not though. I have a high pain threshold and always get to work when ill, never take sick days for a minor cold etc.

Ear infections are killer.

Suffering through one at the moment, so I know how you feel.

Can you see another GP?

I've tried the other gp at the practice, but he is an NQ doctor who has a bit of a thing about not prescribing antibiotics. The last time I saw him he gave a very long, very patronising talk on how nearly all illnesses are viral and clear up on their own and I am irresponsible to think that I can tell if an infection is viral or bacterial......

The thing is, I am not a hypochondriac. I don't ever go to a doctor expecting antibiotics other than with an ear infection because I know from lots of unfortunate experience when I have one.

I would be asking the GP to refer you to an ENT specialist asap due to the ongoing hearing loss. This is not a problem for GPs to be trying to treat or mess around with.

I feel strongly about this because my DH would not have such a large degree of hearing loss in one ear if the GP had not messed around and had referred far earlier.

I would also look into changing GP practice in the longer term as well.

hi Attila,

I have asked for the ENT referral but the gp said that it was a simple infection.....

I think you're right, time to change practice.
