Mirena problems or not??? Help!

I need some advice please.

I have a Mirena coil in, had it since July and I think I need it out. A few weeks ago I was diagnosed with migraines and recently my headaches have become so frequent I'm chewing painkillers like sweets. Also I'm constantly itching all over my body, my arms and legs are covered in small bumps and sores where I've scratched. It didn't even occur to me it could be the Mirena until I checked the side effects on the booklet that the dr gave me and then did some research online. I'malso really tired all the time and piling on the weight recently.

Dp thinks I should chat with the dr and not jump to conclusions but I think I should just get it taken out. I used to have the implant and had to get that taken out due to persistent heavy bleeding and while with the Mirena the bleeding has been inconsistent it's not as bad as with the implant.

Is it possible hormonal contraceptives don't agree with me, perhaps condoms are the best??

Thanks if you've read all this

Hi. I can't take hormonal contraceptives at all. Had problems with Mirena although dissimilar from those you're describing. Think it's quite possible that it is Mirena. I know it's old fashioned, but you could consider a diaphragm/cap. Your DP probably not keen on condoms!

Probably not much help but may give you another option.

I have also had mine i n since about july and i have also noticed im having lots of quite severe headaches,l almost migrains with that sickness feeling.

I am also thinking itmay be causing me to have r eal mood swings, i find myself on teh brink of tears constantly. im not depressed as such but i am starting to think that these may all be side effects of teh coil.

I am s eriously considering having it taken out too but it stops my period and has been very good as a contraceptive in as much as im not pregenant

Thanks, I'm going to ring dr tomorrow as it's driving me barmy now, think I'll have to insist on dp using condoms, he won't be overly thrilled with the idea but I can't keep trying all this hormonal crap and putting up with all this!

Belle might ask about a diaphragm, never tried one before but worth a bash! (so to speak)

Assume you have tried mini-pill? If not, maybe worth a go? I have diaphragm but had one years and years ago so not such a trial for me. Had to go to Family Planning to get it though as nurse at GP's surgery had no idea how to fit one!

I had a load of problems when I had the mirena which I thought were the Mirena's fault. After several years and a whole string of doctors, it turned out that the problems were in fact hormonal, but not from the Mirena's hormones. I wasn't getting enough estrogen (my body had started producing it erratically (peri-menopausal) and the Mirena does not emit enough hormone to help). The solution to my problems was to go on the pill. It sounds like your problems could well be from a lack of estrogen...Google the symptoms of perimenopause...and that the pill, instead of the Mirena might solve things.

I was itching and scratching like a madwoman on the Mirena.

Hi SirCharlie,

The Mirena coil was the worst thing to happen in my life:-

Headaches, acne, depression, weight gain, skin rash, hair loss.

GP insisted these symptoms were not linked to this device from hell. My local Family Planning Clinic were fantastic, confirmed I was sensitive to the hormones within the coil and decided it had to go!!

The removal of the Mirena coil was one of best things to happen in my life:-

NO headaches, acne, depression, working on the weight gain, skin rash or hair loss.

The Mirena coil doesn't suit everyone, only you know you're own body. Do what you think is best for you and get further information on alternative contraception.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
