Been referred by my foot doctor who I saw last week. I went ot foot doctor after mentioning I get pain in feet int he morning to GP. I have come away with a wedge in my shos due to plantar fasciitis! Not as bad as it sounds. is easier int he space of a week but he didnt know why I was getting numb toes and tiggling feet when im wearing trainer, or walking lots. Just had call from GPs office, GP want to see me about referal next week .
I dont even know what they do, just that foot doctor said he would refer for further test.
TIA

rheumatologists look at arthritis and related illnesses - I know as I have one ;)

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 19/11/2009 16:42

should also say that foot doctor commented about the clicking my joints were doing during exam, and having tests at GP for tireness (thinkiing need more iron in diet due to IBS)

Well they usually do blood tests as pain on the joints etc from a rheumatology POV are caused by auto immunity(and not wear and tear) and are usually trated with mild immunosuppression

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 19/11/2009 16:44

nooo must never google! thought everyone knew that LOL

well i guess i should be thankful my new GP seems on top of things, i normally just come away with different tablets which help for a few weeks, then back again.
Oh well will see what GP says next week, and see what bloods show up. Im only 27 sure hoping nothing major, but not worth worrying about what might not be hey

I def dont have hyperjoint moility, im too inflexiable

I have ckicking joints, sore knees, painful pelvis, terrible pains in hands especially when cold and have major SPD when pregnant. As said above blood tests are being done as so very tired, but oculd be IBS, stress or just run down.

Rheumatologists deal with a multitude of conditions that come under the 'Rheumatology' umbrella....(I'm a Rheumatology Physio). Not always Rheumatoid arthritis, can be joint problems that are not Rh.A, can be hypermobility, SLE, fibromyalgia.

They are basically specialists in joint aches and pains that don't require surgery (otherwise you would see an orthopaedic doctor).

Hope that helps.

P.S. 'Rheumatism' is basically very waffley out of date terminology that doesn't really mean anything other than 'joint aches and pains'. It's not a diagnosis as such.

thumbwitch · 19/11/2009 17:17

lisad - you might be low on manganese in your diet. An old nurse friend of mine was taught that manganese links with "manky knees" - a sign of deficiency. You could try taking a multimineral supplement as well as seeing the GP and the rheumatologist

(it's unlikely that they will test you for manganese deficiency, I have to say)

Luckymummy -
what treatments are there for an elderly lady with RA knees? Mum's doctor has said knee operation/steroid injections. She is in a lot of pain but hates painkillers as they upset her stomach. I think she would reject an op as a very elderly lady. What are people in her position doing about it other than gritting their teeth?

lisad123wantsherquoteinDM · 19/11/2009 17:30

I developed SPD with DD2 but just never got better, (both front and back) should have seen state of me after sports on sunday, I looked like an old lady
Thaks for all suggestions, hopefully this might be the answer to my never ending list of illnesses, that seem to come and go

I actually prefer "rheumatitus", and I intend to use it at every opportunity:
"How's it going Catinthehat?"
"Ooh me rheumatitus is playing up dreadful and I can't move me grillocks at all".

rheumatologists look for so many problems..but mainly auto immune diseases...their area of expertise is vast
