Post op infection- should I contact doctor again?

(this message box is behaving oddly, hope it posts okay)

The night before last the scab came off the belly button incision and all this yellowish blood just ran out. I contacted doc and they sent round district nurse who just cleaned it and put a small dressing over it despite the fact I told her stuff had just been running out of it and there were hard parts around which felt like more of it. Anyway, that dressing lasted about an hour.

Loads more stuff has been coming out and the nurse did get the doc to prescribe me antibiotics so I've been taking them. I've been keeping it clean and letting it drain. But then this morning I started with a high temperature which does go away with tablets, but comes back once they wear off. I also feel really nauseous.

Should I wait for the antibiotics to work or should I get back in touch? The district nurse is coming again tomorrow morning.

I would ask the district nurse to come again today and have a look. They can use a drain bag that sits over the wound like a plaster - mum my had one a few weeks ago for a similar thing.

Might be worth ringing the doctor for advice - as how long before the antibiotics should kick in.

Hope you feel better soon.

doesnt sound to good. if you have a temp you have got an infection,i would think . What ABx have they put you on?

alypaly · 19/11/2009 15:29

have you got the phone number of the ward where you had your op. Ring the sister and ask her advice.

Also the district nurse should have taken a swab of the wound so they can see if there are any bacteria growing, and make sure you're on the right type of antibiotics.
Would second contacting the ward and asking their opinion. Hope you feel better soon.

i agree with stan

Yes the nurse took a swab.

Called the doctors and he came round about half an hour ago. Just have to keep going as is at the moment, let antibiotics work, let wound keep draining. I am on 500mg fluclox 4 times a day. I think it's responsible for the nausea I also have.

Of course by the time he got here my temp was finally under control after hours and I'd had a long nap so he probably thought I was a big fraud.

yeah fluclox can make you feel sick....thought they might have put you on co-amoxiclav....When will they have the results to the swab. Keep on with it and bang the paracetamol in to help the temp. Hopr you get sorted soon
