Torn/frayed ligament - come and talk to me about yours

Injured my wrist in May in a soft play centre. Suspected break, then supected ligament damage. Had arthroscopy under GA and this confirmed that. They said its 50% whether or not they operate again and pin in, put stich in and plaster cast. Few weeks ago surgeon agreed as I am not having much/any pain to leave it and see. But this week I stupidly strained it and it hurts.

So what do you think I should do - if I go to him he may push for surgery which I am keep to avoid. I have put on tubigrip again (I have't had splint/tubigrip on since mid sept) in an attempt to help. Do you think physio would help?

I was trying to cut a carrot tonight and was finding it hard to push knife down without pain - am really worried now that I have hurt it more. Bloody soft play.

Would love to hear anyone with similar stories or anyone opinions..anything really

Think I may have same problem as you, Giraffes. I fell over in July and broke my scaphoid, had plaster on for 13 weeks, just waiting for results of latest CT scan.

Not got a cast on at the moment, and trying to use it as much as possible to see if that'll help. Not painful to touch any more, but still aching sometimes and hurts if bent backwards. Can't do anything like press ups (just the thought makes me wince)and chopping veg, door handles, drying hair etc can be difficult.

Consultant thinks the bone has healed, but is now talking about ligament damage. Just wish I knew what the problem was, so I could get it fixed.

Have got a skiing holiday booked in Feb, and I will be skiing, no matter what. (I'll probably fall and break the other one!!!)

Hope yours gets sorted soon.

it is a relatively simple op....there is a list of specialists that do hand and wrist surgery up in manchester

they really helped my DS2

tipsy - can they see any ligament damage in xray? They could see some in mine and then the arthroscopy confirmed it. I was really really hoping they would fix it in same op but apparenly they dont do that.

I am the same wrt pushing back wards, first things like holding a kettle/turning the tap were a no no. But not I can do them but its like if I am sitting on floor I cant use riht hand to push me up. It was better and I was wondering if the pain was more from the damage they did poking about in op but since I have pulled it again I am not so sure.

They said have to be in cast for 6 weeks after the op, and then I assume it will take longer to get thins back than after arthoscopy so say 3 months - thats 9 months of not being able to use hand properly. And I need to for work.

Would love to speak to someone who had the op about what difference it made. Am really hoping they heal themselves. Arthritis in the furture has been mentioned if they dont heal properly. If I had a permenant job it might be different but I dont so cant afford time off.

tipsycat...i was in a car crash a few years ago and arrived at the ski resort with my arm in plaster. The rep looked mortified...and said people go home with a broken arm..not arrive with one. But nothing would stop me skiing either. I had 5 broken ribs too from the impact and i could hear them crackling when i was skiing.

My ex BF had a broken right scaphoid from the car crash and he has had so much pain since. He ended up having an op as scaphoids can be difficlt to heal sometimes. He had to have the bits pinned as they were really broken up right at the flat joint. He unfortunately has quite bad arthritis in his wrist

alypaly · 19/11/2009 00:25

most surgery tends to bring on early arthritis...my son broke both his thumbs in a fall on holiday and the consultant said if he operated to pin them ,he would get arthritis, so we didnt have the op and they have thankfully both healed with no pain or stiffness.

giraffesCannaeFlingPieces · 19/11/2009 08:25

Thats interesting the surgeons main reason for wanting to operate was to prevent arthritis because with the ligament damaged means the bones would rub together or something. Oh I am so confused!

at ribs cracking - you must be a very determined skier to want to persevere with that!

you should have seen us on holiday.
BF had a broken scaphoid on one arm and about 20 stitches on the other as his arm got damaged when the car rolled and stitches above his eye. So couldnt use his poles to ski. I also had an arm in plaster,5 broken ribs and a prolapsed disc in back....determination....too right....cant go without skiing....but picture us in the sack for a brief moment with all these broken arms..it was a new passionate relationship....it was hilarious....we never worked out if we were groaning in pain or pleasure ha ha ha ha
