Can have Pandremix now or Celvapan in January - WWYD?

I'm nervous about Pandremix but if I took that I'd be protected from about a week's time (as that's when I can have the jab). I've been offered Celvapan if I want it but wouldn't be protected untli the middle of January for that one (as can't get the jab until December and it takes a few weeks to gain immunity from it). If I wait until January I'll have risked going through a lot of the flu season unprotected (I have asthma).

What would you do?!

Hi there,

I'm going for Pandemrix this friday, even though I could have the celvapan vaccine in 2 weeks time.... I'm due to give birth in 4 weeks time so I didnt think I'd be protected enough with the Celvapan. Also, Pandemrix gives you a far higher level of protection than Celvapan and the immunity stays with you for longer, so I think its the better injection as far as protection is concerned, in addition, Pendemrix is being tried and tested in this country at a far greater level than Celvapan as thats what the majority of people are having and so far no reports of adverse reactions have been noted in pregnant women. See the various links on this website for references.

www.mhra.gov.uk/Safetyinformation/Swinefluinformation/swinefluvaccines/index.htm

Also, with regards to the mercury content, its a very low amount. Pandemrix contains 5 micrograms of Tiomersal which in turn contains 2.5mcg of mercury. The mercury is to prevent bacteria forming in the multidose vials. Single does vaccines don't contain mercury but they take a lot longer to produce. This vaccines was needed fast so it has been produced in batches.

It's a tiny, tiny dose. The average pregnant women ingests more mercury than this weekly through food. A 10 stone woman on average consumes 6 micrograms of mercury a week in her diet. In addition, the form of mercury used in the injected vaccine is flushed out by the body much more easily and rapidly than the mercury form which occurs in food.

For references, please see this article in a respected Norwegian newspaper, it is in Norwegian but you can easily translate it to english using the 'google translate function'

Finally, one does not know how the swine flu will take off over the next few months, dec, jan and feb are traditionally the months when the normal flu takes off, who knows if swine flu will follow suit?

One thing I am sure about is that the swine flu can be very dangerous and harm both mother and baby, is it worth taking the risk?

Hope this helps!

I had pandremix today.

Really thought about it but in the end thought I really don't want to get the flu.
Had flu in sept and ended up ith chest infection and shite asthma that I am just recovering from now.

And it scared me when I heard of a death of someone's wife.

No side effects yet.

thanks both of you. ggirl, I think you probaly hit the nail on the head with really not wanting to get it. I think I am leaning towards the Pandremix. And waitingwaiting, the lack of testing (or lack of data) on Celvapan was also making me wonder about it.

good news -was expecting to feel a bit shite today as others who have had it have warned me- but I feel fine.

How did you get offered the Celvapan Bodengirl? At our surgery they are saying it is for egg allergic people only. I would like to have the choice [have been offered Pandemrix]

Bodenbabe · 18/11/2009 17:07

I emailed our local PCT then phoned them as didn't get answer from email. On the phone they said "no way, Celvapan for allergy sufferers only" but then someone replied via email saying "ok, let's talk..." and when I spoke to the email person she sadi she'd put me on the list for the egg allergy clinic, even though I wan't allergic. So it seems like getting a sympathetic ear at the local PCT is the way round it.

Have decided to go with Pandremix now though, as am too nervous about waiting until January.
