Surprise phone call from Dr. offering my DD swine flu vaccination

Just canvassing opinions as I was surprised to receive a phone call from my GP offering my DD who is 12 the vaccination.

When she was 18 months old DD had an operation to remove a brain tumour (benign thankfully). She has had no chemotherapy or other interventions since apart from MRI scans which no longer happen. She has been left with a weakness on her left-side due to the operation as the tumour was on her brain stem and the top of her spinal cord. She has no immunity problems, no seizures or anything. The GP said that the Dept. of Health recommendations are that all children with neurological conditions are being offered the vaccine. I said she doesn't really have a neurological condition and am quite confused about whether she should have the vaccine. Gp was saying better be safe than sorry which makes me feel rather guilty if I say no but I actually feel rather confused about the whole thing.

Can anyone offer info. or suggestions? I know no one who has contracted swine flu so the whole thing has passed me by until now.

I got a call today too on behalf of DS - he has asthma so was offered on that basis.

I've accepted it and he's got his first shot on Monday and the following one next month

I am also thinking "better safe" because it's highly unlikely anything will happen, but just if it does, I'd rather he had extra immunisation due to his weakened lungs and immune system...

Lewisfan,

I can quite see why your son needs the vaccine. However in my dd's case there is no good reason - she is booked in for next Tuesday at the moment however.

My dd and ds2 both got offered it.

dd had heart surgery as a toddler, but is completely healthy now.

Ds2 is completely healthy he had a wheezy episode as a baby and the docs thought he might have asthma because dh is asthmatic.

They both also get called for a normal flu jab every year.

They won't be having either one.

They are probably just going quickly through the patient lists rather than fully dissecting their medical histories.

My DD was offered a jab because she had asthma for a few years. She is fine now but is still monitored.
