spotty skin is driving me mad.........

Since I have had children my skin has been gradually getting worse - my cheeks are really spotty, like acne during my period, it is really getting me down. I have been tested for POS but it isn't that, I'm waiting for a dermatology referral.
I never had great skin but it wasn't as bad as this, it seems to be becoming sensitive too. When I have my period I also get mouth ulcers (have had these since childhood) and greasy hair. I feel vile, I am rarely spot free.
Has anyone else had similar problems? Any advice or tips welcome.

Have you tried taking evening primrose oil or starflower oil food supplements?

I get frequent spotty break outs but have recently started taking evening primrose which does seem to be having a positive effect.

I had a course of roaccutane this year (you can only get it from your dermatologist). It has some pretty harsh side effects, but worth every bit. My course was 16 weeks. I finished in August and haven't had another spot. I had them all along my jawline and across my shoulders, only easing up in pregnancy.

I hope your dermatology appt goes well.

As a side effect, the roaccutane also dried my hair out. I could stop washing it every day and broke the cycle. I now wash it every second or third day and it looks so much better.

I do take evening primrose already (mainly for my evil premenstural moods!)
My doctor gave me a course of tetracyclene but that didn't touch them.
The roaccutane sounds great, Tartanknickers, can I ask you how old you are and have you always had problem skin? I am 37, and as I said, my skin has always been prone to outbreaks, but nothing like this. Do you wear make up? Did you have to change it or your skincare. or did the roaccutane work on its own?

I've had horrible acne for years and had various lotions and potions but ^ weeks ago I went to my (lovely GP and he sympathised more than any I've seen before and prescribed some Acnamino tablets and a cream which I forget the name of at the moment.
I now have completely clear skin, it was awful for the first week or so, my confidencce took an even bigger knock as my skin dried so much it was flaking off but I just kept whacking on aqueous (sp?) cream and now I couldn't be happier with the results.

Will pop back later and give you the name of the cream.

I have every sympathy with you, its awful, but you can have it dealt with, keep on at your GP and you can get it sorted.
If you don't get anywhere with one dr, try another.
Its taken me ages but got there in the end!

is it rozex or nicam gel or panoxyl

bonnyb1 - I am 34. I've had acne on and off since my teens. Like I say, it only ever eased off in pregnancy. I never had a lot of spots, but the ones I did have were large and really painful, and quite widespread.

I've had loads of anti-biotics and lotions over the years and nothing worked for any length of time.

With roaccutane, you have to use two forms of contraception, as it is really dangerous to conceive while on it. I stayed on the pill(dianette) and used condoms.

Dianette worked for my acne for a while, but it's not recommended for long term use.

The roaccutane started to work after the first month, and my skin is still improving now. Scars are fading and I feel so much better

Side effects were really achy joints - espescially my hips. You get unbelievably dry lips while on it. Other parts get very dry too

I always wore make-up. I was in that vicious cirle of wearing make-up to cover spots, but I don't suppose the make-up helped my skin breathe etc. Now I wear a tinted moisturiser to work, and no foundation or anything at home. I was very much a "make-up on to answer the door" person.

I hope that answers everything. If your dermatologist recommends it, I would give it some serious thought. For me it has worked and my dermatologist says when it works this well, there is a 98% chance the acne will stay away for good.

HTH

The gel stuff was Adapelene (differin), again, I was told to use 'extra' contraception as it will cause deformities if I got pregnant.

Good stuff though!

Let us know how you get on.
Hope you get sorted soon.

sorry only just had chance to pop back and read...........
thanks everyone - my dermatologist apt was for today but unfortunately had to postpone it as both my DDs are off school poorly! However probably a good thing as for the first time in ages my skin is fairly clear...typical. Last week it was awful and I had a really important meeting with people I hadn't met before and I felt so self conscious - I do whack the make up on, I would love to just put on some tinted moisturiser.

My new apt is dec 8th, so fingers crossed! Not worried about the contraception stuff, I got sterilised about 6 wks ago
