Essentially you need to cut right back on the amount of fat in your diet - so if you eat meat, going for lean cuts, and trimming all visible fat off meat before cooking, making sure you don't add any additional fat whien cooking. (Grilling rather than frying as well). Try to cut out cakes/biscuits/crisps as these are loaded with hidden fats. Start reading food labels to see exectly how much fat is in the food you eat.
Increase the amount of fruit and veg youeat - start off aiming for 5 portions a day. Having things like porridge for breakfast and having pulses (eg beans, lentils) instead of meat once or twice a week will help too.
You can buy things like benecol, but you have to use a certain amount of them for it to have any effect and they're quite expensive. Aplolgies for brusque manner, am trying to BF DD at the same time!
Some good information here

Thanks stanansauras it has not really sunk in yet but I think we will make the change as a family as it has to be healthier for all of us. DH has never been keen on veg./pulses/beans I guess it time to get keen. I want to get this under control ASAP as it scares the hell out of me becouse DH's dad died of a heart attack we have 2 young dc's and if something were to happen I don't know what I would do. I will just go and look at the link now.

A friend had this. She saw a cardiologist who advised: porridge every morning and an apple every day - the cholesterol binds to the oats and pectin and removes it from the body.
Also, cut down on dairy and fat as previous post mentioned.

my dad has high cholesterol - was advised to replace all refined carbs with wholegrains, brown rice, wholewheat pasta, plenty of oily fish, porridge
avoid all saturated fats, lose weight and cook without adding fat
