Weird migraine symptoms - tell me yours and make me feel less of a freak!

When I have a migraine on the way, I lose the ability to string a sentence, and all I can reliably say is "Listen" and "fuckfuckfuck"

Which I did to my lovely but understandably nonplussed friend over the phone this morning.

Sometimes I go temporarily blind - I can 'see' but can make no sense of what I see.

None of these things last for long, but it's so weird when it does happen!

To me the world seems incredibly sharply focussed (a bit like in a film) and I see everything really clearly and as though it is all new and different. I feel 'displaced'. Don't get the verbal issues thou'!

Saltire · 16/11/2009 16:09

I don't get verbal things, but get blind spots, zig zag lines on my eyes, and sometimes I get a tingly feeling in my mouth, but it doesn't affect my word.

iwouldgoouttonight · 16/11/2009 16:28

I get the verbal things - it scared the s**t out of me when it first happened. Was about ten years ago and it was the first day in a new job. Suddenly was completely unable to string a sentence together - kind of lost the ability to know how to form words. My tongue kind of goes tingly a bit like pins and needles on one side, and I get tunnel vision with kind of flashing lights and can't make sense of what I'm seeing.

I'm glad someone else knows what I mean (although obviously not glad that you're suffering too!) because most people in RL think I'm completely over-reacting because they think a migraine is just a bad headache.

Luckily now I know what it is and take my medication at the first sign and it normally just turns into a normal headache after about half an hour.

ArizonaBarker · 16/11/2009 16:31

I get the same, Blackduck.

Also sometimes get really blurry vision, which was particularly scarey when I was pregnant as I was convinced I had pre-eclampsia.

I also get really anxious and slur my words.

Kathyis12feethighandbites · 16/11/2009 16:35

yup, verbal and visual things.
Sometimes I look at a page and can't read it instantly but have to piece it together as if I'm just learning to read. Once I looked at a page of text and couldn't see any 'e's. I don't generally get bad headaches but then I end up being horrifically washed out for several days after.

Kathyis12feethighandbites · 16/11/2009 16:36

strange colour effects too - I once bought a black skirt while having a migraine, under the impression it was green.

TheCrackFox · 16/11/2009 16:37

I get pins and needles in my face and hands. Very scary at first. Again the headaches aren't too bad but I feel washed out for a few days.

CMOTdibbler · 16/11/2009 16:39

Pre migraine, I see like I have water in my eyes, yawn lots and have the urge to rotate my neck a lot. During migraine, I just vom and sleep

PoppyIsApain · 16/11/2009 16:58

I start off with blurry vision, i cant see anything properly, that last about an hour, i also dont make sense when speaking, i then go numb all over my body, literally everywhere. I finish off with vomiting and a seriously bad headache for a couple of days. It really angers me when my sil says she had a migraine cos its a bloody headache.
Does anyone else get them much more frequently when pregnant? With ds i had 2/3 a week for half of my pg and lost so much weight, im mental as ttc again now

cositjustisok · 16/11/2009 17:00

I get the exact same symptoms as you do Colditz....honestly thought I was having a stroke the first time it happened to me. Get a tingly tongue too and my hearing goes really sharp never get much of a headache though. Also get the feeling of being really spaced out.

bumpybecky · 16/11/2009 17:03

when I first started getting migraine I had atypical migraines. My feet and hands went numb for hours at a time, no headache at all though

I've only had a couple of proper migraines since and lose the ability to speak properly and last time couldn't lace up shoes either!

devilsadvocaat · 16/11/2009 17:09

apparently it is where the blood vessels in you brain are dilating. depending on what part of your brain they press, it causes various side effects.

for me: zig zags and blind spots which end up covering whole vision, some verbal loss, washed out feeling. when i was a teen i'd get the blinding headache and sickness. truly awful.

Tomatefarcie · 16/11/2009 17:12

Just before the blurry vision thing, I get the really really sharp vision thing too. Really focused and defined. Which is weird for me as I have astigmatism .

Then get the blurry vision thing, can't speak, can't read, can't remember much of what I do say.I yawn a lot too.

Then vision comes back, out comes the Mother of All Headaches+vom+tingly tongue+ overactive bladder.

When migraine ends: euphoria, happy to be alive and in one piece.

mummygogo · 16/11/2009 18:59

I get vision which is like looking through cracked glass, like a line going across my vision, its starts small then grows and finally dispurses. Makes you feel like S**t

waitingforbedtime · 16/11/2009 19:01

I get a sore jaw, eye, head, neck and feel sick and my sense of smell is really really strong.

JANEITEisntErudite · 16/11/2009 19:04

Yes to hyper-sense of smell; yes to blurred vision (horrible and scary); yes to pins and needles and nausea. The only time I've had the speech thing (and it frightened the life out of me) was after I sprained my wrist really badly when ice-skating: I knew what I wanted to say but was coming out with utter rubbish instead.

JANEITEisntErudite · 16/11/2009 19:05

Ooh yes to tingly tongue too (try saying that after a few pints!).

pucca · 16/11/2009 19:10

Yep i get very odd migraine symptoms. I get half blacked out vision as my "warning" then my left arm, hand, side of face, and tongue go numb and I talk like i have drank a bottle of vodka.

A different type of migraine i get is where it is just intense pain so bad i cannot lift my head at all.

It is great fun! not.... i am on beta blockers now which do help alot with preventing them. I still get them but not as bad.

shootfromthehip · 16/11/2009 19:14

I get the blurred vision first and then lose the vision in my right eye. I then get the pins and needles thing down my right side and then my speech goes. Fun isn't it. I then end up with the hideous headache for a couple of days and feel totally washed out. Yuck.

JANEITEisntErudite · 16/11/2009 19:15

I also get the strange sensation of feeling horribly sick but really hungry too.

Tidey · 16/11/2009 19:21

I've only had migraines a few times, but I had flashing colours in my vision, then everthing went blurred. I couldn't make sense of anything written down and parts of the writing in the book I was reading seemed to be missing. Also had the pins and needles in my hands and my chin and side of my face went numb.

I'm very glad I don't get them regularly, they are terrifying. Very sorry for all of you that get them often, I wouldn't wish them on my worst enemy.

DidEinsteinsMum · 16/11/2009 19:24

I get the tongue tied thing, the flashing lights, the tunnel vision, the pins and needles in half face and inability to use one side of my body eg to hold a cup or anything. And often fall over. Needless to say when i have a full blown migraine i have been shoved to A&E by a few well meaning individuals concerned about stroke possibilities etc. I now have two types of migraine meds - treater (zomig for at point of attack) and a preventer (for breaking cycles of migraines)
Hope you feel better/are ok OP

Lotster · 16/11/2009 19:29

I also get the numbness with a-typical migraines. Usually one hand, then my top lip, then tongue. My eyes go starry and I slur. No headache though, I just end up needing to lie down and my brain feels like a smoking, shorted circuit.

Last one was at nine weeks pregnant so got referred to a neurologist who cleard up what it, and the three previous, were.
Seem to get no more than one every few years so it's always terrifying again because I forget. Definately occur around times of stress, or hormonally induced (one induced by the combined pill, two early on in both pregnancies).

Worst one was the second one, when I was driving home one evening after a root canal filling and both hands, and my mouth went completely numb, I could see myself driving but couldn't feel the wheel! Really wrong of me not to pull over, but was driving through a bit of a rough area and was too scared.. Lasted about 10 mins and apparently during that time I called my husband (then BF) trying to ask him to get a doctor (but could only slur "dentist") and also called my mum just wailing which I don't remember at all. Also wonder how I called on the handsfree and drove?? Good old NHS direct told me I'd had a panic attack despite me being calmly singing along to the radio when it happened

noddyholder · 16/11/2009 19:30

I get the zig zag pattern down one side just out of my vision range It gets bigger and bigger stabilises and then goes leaving me exhausted.Strangely if I get a bad case of visual disturbance i get no headache but if i get small zig zag plus headache I end up in agony vomiting.Exhausting

FourArms · 16/11/2009 20:06

I get the speech things too - can't get my words to a sentence in the correct order.

Sometimes flashing lights, severe headache, vomiting, numbness. They are horrible horrible things.

PoppyIsAPain I had horric migraines whilst pg with DS1. Ended up signed off work for weeks at a time, and went on mat leave as early as I could. Was hospitalised several times with them as my bp went sky high and I also had pre-eclampsia. Don't think I had any at all with DS2.

Had my most recent one yesterday. Vomitted three times trying to get DS1 his breakfast. Thought I was going to have to 'call a friend' as DH is away for a few more weeks yet. Thankfully the meds took effect just in time.

This thread has reminded me that I need to go to the GP and get some stronger tablets. I was pg or bfing from June 03 to May 09, so could never take anything suitably strong. But I can now.
