I've got cystitis, feeling miserable, just had to make my excuses and leave a dinner party early. I haven't had it for years, any tips on how to survive at least until I can get to the shops and buy something for it would be very welcome....

Some bicarbonate of soda (teaspoon-ish) in glass of water... Drink loads and loads of water. Avoid tea/coffee/alcohol/orange juice. If it's bad, go to GP asap. They may not want to prescribe antibiotics if they think you haven't tried everything so suggest you say that you have. You can get sachets of powder from chemist which may work if it's not too bad. Also, a new liquid type thing which is stronger and definitely helps with symptoms more. Had it really badly only week before last and just finished antibiotics (which gave me thrush - joy) but it's finally gone. Know it can make you really miserable. Hope it goes v soon.

suggest you log on to www.cobfoundation.org

lots of help there. Hope you feel better soon.

my tip - keep a check on it if you can't do anything about it right away. I once had a bad bout which wasn't treated fully in time before it developed into a kidney infection - very very painful and unpleasant.
Hope you feel better soon!

tiredfeet · 15/11/2009 23:55

thank you for the tips, v helpful!

the link is good too. I tried nhs direct etc before posting but they didn't really have anything helpful except how to prevent further bouts, which I already knew, they had nothing really about how to deal with the symptoms until you can get to dr / chemist

lemon barley water, loads and loads of it. also see if you can find an all night supermarket or chemist and get those powders you dissolve in water. get on the phone first thing in the morning to your GP - they should prescribe without having to see you - could be done over phone.
hot bath to ease the feeling of needing the loo. and drink drink drink and drink. i had it back in August - you have my sympathies - its absolutely horrible!

Plonker · 16/11/2009 00:05

Water. Gallons and gallons if it.

Hope you're feeling better soon

tiredfeet · 16/11/2009 07:30

Been on water and bicarbonaate of soda during the night. feels a bit less 'stinging' but I feel quite sick (which I guess may just be because I'm tired) and have had a bit of pain in my lower back, rouhgly where I would imagine my kidney would be. I wasn't plannign to go to / call the GP, just to get some of those sachets, but was wondering whether maybe I should?

poor you, I would go to GP just in case, I ended up passing blood very quickly.

diddl · 16/11/2009 07:53

Yes I agree with the drinking lots of water.

But would get to gp asap to prevent it travelling to kidneys!

girlsyearapart · 16/11/2009 08:10

Yep feel your pain mine ALWAYS turn into kidney infections.

DRink lots of water/cranberry and keep warm.

alypaly · 16/11/2009 11:10

sodium bicarb will give you belly ache and the trots pretty badly as it is a laxative.Thats why you feel sick probably.Stay near a loo
By some Mist POT citrate which is the same as the cystemme and sachet stuff...only 1/3 rd of the price. Drink it with lots of water. If you have any traces of blood in urine you must go to doc...but if it is that bad anyway i would see your gp ...take a urine sample and get some antibiotics before it spreads to kidneys.

luckymumof2 · 16/11/2009 11:15

Poor you! Hope you are feeling better today. I find Cystopurin or similar from chemist or supermarket are always worth keeping in the cupboard (and even handbag if you suffer regularly). Cranberry juice is supposed to help - but can't say it makes a huge difference. Warm water - loads of it - and couple of paracetamol will help ease the pain .

alypaly · 16/11/2009 11:38

luckymum....mist pot cit is much cheaper....you are paying for a brand and it is the same thing.Just trying to save you money

Pinner35 · 16/11/2009 11:50

I used to suffer from cystitis and I remember once having a attack very late at night. I was home alone and in severe pain. My boyfriend (now DH) lived 45 mins away so I called an ex and be brought around 2 litres of cranberry juice. I drank it all immediately, was better pretty quickly and have never suffered again.

Hope you feel better soon...it really is miserable.

MargoLB · 16/11/2009 11:52

All you cystisis sufferers- try this stuff- Waterfall D-Mannose. I use it and it goes away in hours- honest! I gave some to my Aunt who is in hers 70's. she has had chronic Cyst for decades and the doctor was always giving her pills + she drank pints of cranberry etc- nothing worked. This has cured her- really really. I told my friend who is a GP about it and she nows recommends it to her patients. Please do try it- a great website that explains it all at www.waterfall-d-manose.com (Sweet Cures)

tiredfeet · 16/11/2009 17:57

thank you so much for all the tips. there was loads I didn't know and I was finding it hard to find stuff beyond the obvious on the internet

weirdly, it has totally cleared up now! I tried calling the doctor but couldn't get through, and none of the shops near me sold any cystitis sachets, so struggled into work and just made sure I drank lots of liquid, some with bicarb of soda in and non-acidic and non sugary, and I actually feel fine now. weird. but was grim at the time and I'm very grateful for the tips!
