So, anyone got this?

Went to GP today, have had high ggt for a while but now v.high.
Hae to go to see a consultant.
Am petrified they will do a biopsy.

In the mean time, is there anything I can do to get ggt down?

what other blood tests have you had done?

are you drinking alcohol?

diddl · 13/11/2009 10:40

No, I don´t drink.

It´s to keep a check on my blood sugar & cholesterol.
Both on the high side, & now the ggt.

Also tested for hepatitis-clear for that.

Do you know what´s incudeed in liver function tests?

here is a summary

Are you overweight?
How is your diet?

Usually they will do more blood tests and a general exam
They don't always biopsy

diddl · 13/11/2009 10:57

Yes, could do with losing a couple of kilos.
Diet-well, could be improved.

Looks like I haven´t had the liver function tests, then.

Thanks for the info.

Just in a complete panic about a biopsy & I haven´t even got the appointment yet!

I feel fine, & if blood wasn´t tested for cholesterol & sugar, wouldn´t even know that there was a problem!

simple things like skipping meals or eating big ones, too much fat, being overweight can upset the liver

diddl · 13/11/2009 12:17

I do tend to eat regularly.
Think my problem is more portion size.

I don´t drink, don´t smoke, don´t eat sugar now & try my hardest to avoid fat & go easy on the carbs.

Just feeling a bit "why me" I guess, so need to snap out of that!

Do you carry your weight around the middle?

dh has for the last few years tested as having 'high liver function'. He as high blood pressure. Based on the demographics of the are rather than what DH tells them, the GPs have been assuming the he is a heavy drinker (and he can do with losing a couple stones) so that must be the reason.

A year ago he had a very thorough private medical. Despite the still high liver function the doctor was satisfied that his liver was a healthy one. The doctor seems to suggest that since he carries the extra weight around his middle, then he'll have a fatty liver which accounts for the high reading.

At this point I doubt they would consider a biopsy. I would look at any test as for ruling out any problems rather than suspecting one and looking for confirmation of it.

diddl · 13/11/2009 12:56

Yes, I would say weight around middle.

It´s just that I´m needle phobic.

More or less have to be sedated when blood is taken!

Not helped by one time the needle went through the side of the vein-so then I had to have it taken from the other arm!

DH had high LFTs. GP said he was drinking too much, so he stopped drinking for 6 months and they didn't come down.

GP said not diet related, but as soon as we cot out takeaway curry the results came back to normal.

trixymalixy · 13/11/2009 13:08

cut not cot

Yes, I almost wished I drank so that I could just cut that out.

Also have high blood sugar & high cholesterol, & think if I could get a handle on one of them, as when one is up, they all are!

Well, perhaps it´s the age old not entirely honest with self about diet, and need a complete lifestyle overhaul.

Sometimes I wish someone would just work out a meal plan for me, or tell me what I can eat, rather than what I can´t!
