A post-hyperemesis thread

Any ex-hyperemesis sufferers want to join me on this thread for a chat?

I had hyperemesis right up until the end of my last pregnancy - ds2 was born about 5 weeks ago - and I'm sort of mulling over the impact of it all and how to get back to normal.

Could have posted this in lots of different topics because of course there are so many areas of your life it affects - relationships, parenting, mental health.

There are such wonderful highs when you enjoy an everyday activity (last Saturday it was 'driving over a bumpy road' ) which a few months ago would have made you sicker than sick.
However at the same time there is stuff like impact on children, etc, which is a bit sadder & it would be nice to talk about.

Anyone like to come and share?

Hello, Katy12feethighandbites

Good name. I have been running a thread called 'Hyperemesis Awareness' which is more of a Hyperemesis Support thread since Janauary and didn't know you'd made this post. We've been quiet on there of late, theere were several Mums realy ill a few weeks ago, but most of them are better now. A couple have just disappeared (worry, worry!)
I had it with my daughter a good few years ago and suffered horribly but the doctor thought that I was making a fuss about normal morning sickness and didn't test my urine, etc. I had (tmi) urine the colour of builder's tea so what would have happened to me if I hadn't luckily been helped by an Acupunturist, I dread to think.
I'd love to chat anytime. Once when my daughter was two I burst into tears outside the clinic remembering, so I think I had a bit of PTSD.

I puked solidly from the moment of conception until DD2'sbirth.

Even now, 12 years later, every time I feel queesy I remember just how horrific it was.

LucindaE · 06/06/2010 13:14

That sounds awful. Did you get any meds?
I still can't believe that doctor I had...

Have just spent the entire summer in bed, throwing up 3-4 times on a good day and over 7 times on a bad day. For anyone who is suffering with hyperemesis I just want you to know that there is more than the GP can offer you. I saw 4 different GPs in a matter of a week and a half (I was about 8 weeks pregnant at the time and had already been in bed, not able to keep any food down since the end of week 5). They all said I should try to sip drinks and eat whatever I could. They didn't want to send me to hospital because I would be more comforatble at home. WRONG!!! A week later, the midwife came to see me. She was the only one to ask for a urine sample, which I couldn't provide because I was only weeing once a day! She sent me to hospital the following day and it was the best thing that could have happened to me. Within 3 days they'd sorted my medication out and I was able to eat food again! I left after a week, and although I feel very weak and tired because of all the weight lost (a lot of it was muscle) at least I'm not throwing up any more. I'm bitterly disappointed with how the GPs treated me and am hugely thankful that the midwife recognised immediately that I needed help.

TheUnmentioned · 02/09/2010 12:29

I dont think HCPs treat it seriously tbh. With my 1st pregnancy I was sick up to 25 times a day from week 7 to 42 (it did improve a bit at 20 weeks).

I was dehydrated, dizzy, tired, and I suffered anxiety which I now see is quite common. I also was TERRIFIED of getting pregnant again after ds was born, I would go so far as to say I had a real phobia of it (hence why I didnt get pregnant for 3 years!).

Its a horrible, horrible, horrible thing. Yes, its worth it but GOD that does not help when youre in the midst of it.

Do you have to be actually throwing up to have HG? I have really bad sickness with this pg (I know this is a post preg thread but couldn't resist posting) and am in bed most of the day with it, I can't cook, DH having to do the lions share of everthing, am tired and miserable from being in so much

Doctor prescribed Avomine but am too scared to take it as worried will harm baby...am managing to eat as it seems to be the only thing that stops me from gagging and wretching but my appetite has diminished...not interested in foods I loved vbefore and am really only eating to stop the gagging and that awful empty feeling in tummy

TheUnmentioned · 02/09/2010 14:16

Pussin Im not sure tbh, I know that I was constantly sick, couldnt keep anything down not even a sip of water. I also had constant nausea. I was only once offered cyclizine and didnt take it as worried about side effects but I am paranoid about these things!

PussinJimmyChoos · 02/09/2010 15:50

Thanks for that - I seem to be in between the two. Am certainly not losing weight - if anything, have put it on because of the constant eating to try and stop myself from gagging/retching but I would say its been definately worse than standard sickness as the nausea is severe and ALL day, although as the pregnancy is progressing (10 weeks 1 day today) I sometimes have an hour or so in evening where I feel more human

Its been hell and fed up with not being able to do my normal stuff. Have tried a trip out to the shops with DH and DS and come back feeling awful and having to lie down!

Tallyra · 03/06/2013 00:30

pussin, take the drugs. and then join Lucinda's support thread. it won't harm the baby, they are too wary of that problem to give anything not tried and tested any more. these drugs have been used for decades now, don't worry. xxxxx

holidayseeker · 04/06/2013 13:12

pussin, I was also scared to take the tablets however the Dr talked sense when he said to me that having a healthy mother who can eat goodness to feed the baby is much better then one who doesn't take the tablet.

holidayseeker · 04/06/2013 13:13

Have any other HG sufferers had any effects on their teeth as I have found that my enamel has really been affected.

holidayseeker · 04/06/2013 13:15

Woops just realised how old this thread was that I have posted on

cupcake78 · 04/06/2013 13:30

I can't wait to be a true post-poster. 3 weeks till due date and I can't wait!!!

Have had HG in all 4 of my pregnancies 2 of which ended in mc. So much for the old saying it will all be worth it. This pregnancy has been particularly horrible and Im so looking forward to not feeling sick anymore.

It has had its effects. Pregnancy wipes me out. Im left feeling like a shell of myself. It affects everything from physical me but emotional me is left in tatters. My teeth are more sensitive than they were, not sure if thats age or due to sickness. Before this pregnancy everytime I felt nauseous I would be filled with dread and have to poas to prove to myself it was just a bug. I think this will stay with me forever!

I'm disappointed that I can't enjoy pregnancy and know that my friends don't fully understand as they've not had it.

This is my last one. Dh has said enough is enough and I have to agree with him. HG affects the whole family so much it would be selfish of me to do this again.
