I have had a horrible cold and cough for upwards of 4 weeks now. I feel constantly under the weather, and have a horrible tickly cough that strikes without warning and leaves me nearly throwing up. I did a bit of admin for the art group I'm in, and then went to the bank today - that's all - and I was utterly wiped out.

Does anyone have any suggestions of supplements I could take - anything really. I'm taking night nurse or another all in one flu remedy at night to help me get some sleep, but am running a temp at nights and not sleeping well at all.

Sorry for being so 'Poor Me' - I'm at the end of my tether, and dh has it too, so he's knackered and can't pick up the slack and I just need someone to come and tuck me up in bed with a hot toddy and a teddy bear and a hankie - sniffle sniffle.

Don't bother too much with meds. Try some real home made rems.

freshly squeezed lemon juice (about 1 teaspoon) with a shot of whisky and teaspoon of honey. Add about 1/4 pint of lemonade and warm to the same temp you have your tea. Don't take any other kind of meds whilst on this one.

Do this just before bed. The lemon will help your sore throat & lower yr temp, the honey will ease that tickle cough and the whisky will help you sleep. The lemonade will help it taste better and is good for getting your rehydration balanced.

Eat plenty of fresh fruit and fresh veg.

Wrap up warm and make sure you wear socks at bedtime, and a hat when you go out.

Eat food with plenty of garlic and onions.

Get well soon

Thank-you both. Will I get in trouble for admitting that I live in Scotland and don't have a bottle of whisky in the house??

I saw my gp last week (for a represcription of my anti-ds) and she thought it was just a cold, but told me to come back if the cough became productive.

I'm definitely going for the honey and lemon tonight - I do have brandy, so may try a nip of that in it - the christmas cake's loss will be my gain - hic!

Active manuka honey... it's expensive but it works ( you can use it on zits too!)

I swear by Allens Pine and Honey for reducing a cough. It tastes like poison, but it works very well.

I used to take Elderberry tincture to boost my immune system, but these days I take a multi-vitamin and mineral every morning instead.

Bran - that's reminded me about the creosote cough linctus you used to be able to get in Boots - it sounds vile, but I loved it. I wonder if you can still get it.

Hope your feeling better with all those different ideas.

I'm getting better slowly, though I still have a dry cough. I did make it to choir practice on Monday, and didn't cough too much.

I haven't managed to motivate myself to get multivitamins and minerals, though I do know I need to do something to boost my immune system.
