My fourteen tear old has been suffering with migraines for the last six months. They seem to have coincided with the start of her periods. She is now having 3-4 a week, which is quite debilitating for her. She is struggling to find relief from conventional painkillers and so the doctor has prescribed Pizotifen.

She is to initially take 0.5 mg a night, increasing it up to 1.5 if it doesn't help at the lower dose. She is taking it as she goes to bed.

I have a couple of concerns regarding weight gain( you know what teenage girls are like on this subject!!) and whether she is going to be really tired during the day because of the sedative type effect.

Has anyone had any experience - good or bad they can share with me. Thanks

Was that because you couldn't see the food, Leonie?!

I think they should sell this as a sleeping pill. I took one at night and I only just got out of bed in the morning to get the kids to school, came home and fell asleep again until it started to wear off about 3pm. Absolute nightmare for me but my DH said it was nice and quiet

At least I didn't put any weight on as I was too tired to eat

Have you tried Imigran in a nasal spray everyone - it is fab - a bugger to get the Dr to prescribe but I went from being hospitalised as my migraines were so severe they were mistaken as strokes to be uneffected by them now.

Stopping smoking has been the bigeest change for me and getting physically fitter - ot all seems to tie in with not getting half as many anymore!

Thank you everyone who replied. We are one week in now and she hasn't had a single migraine(usually 2-3 a week). She doesn't seem any hungrier so I am hopeful she has escaped this as a side effect.
