Hi everyone

My 8 month old DD has recently cut 2 teeth...had cold after cold and now has a cough and is SO miserable...wont eat and has consequently lost nearly a pound in weight in a month and the HV puts it down to hay fever and recommended homeopathic hay fever granules. Can anyone help or advise what they think about this?

Thanks

Hi Vickie,
my 4 yr old ds has hayfever. He gets red itchy eyes and a wheezy cough. His symptoms come on normally april/may. I think if it's a cold the snot is green and hayfever it's just clear also hayfever usually causes alot more sneezing. You could try antihistamines for a while and see if it helps, then you would know. I don't think it can do any harm. Have you been to your doctor?
hope he is better soon.

sorry, meant hope SHE is better soon!

Hi, advice for 3 yr old who seems to have come down with heavy hayfever please... she sneezed a bit for a while but we visited a farm on Sat with hay everywhere & since then her nose is streaming & she is pretty miserable. Just wondered if the liquid piriton is worth buying, I can't take piriton cos it knocks me out & wouldn't normally want to give her anything too druggy, but she was so miserable last night I want to try something.
Use homeopathic Pollena myself tho not convinced it works.
Thanks.

What about new era combination H, or Luffa complex

DD (18 months) also suffers from hayfever. I thought it was just a cough hanging around so took her to the doctor last week who diagnosed hayfever and prescribed piriton (or some equivalent - can run downstairs to get the name if anyone wants me to?) and she seems much better now. She does not seem sleepier than normal even though the bottle says it may make her drowsy. It is lovely to have a full nights sleep again!

Sent dh out this eve & he came back with Ben-something which we gave her, currently asleep. Ironically, he didn't get piriton in case it made her sleepy...& funnily enough he doesn't wake up in the night when she yells either.
Just hope she isn't bad all summer.

Thanks. It is benedryl, presume similar to piriton. Have just taken some myself to see if it helps, dd waking up a bit but not too bad.
Re honey, have heard about that & wondered if it really works, great idea if it does tho presumably would only apply to a certain radius from where it's produced.
Will have to remember to search for local stuff next year but you don't normally think until it's too late.

My 5 yo ds starts snuffling in March and continues through the Summer. Have used homeopathy in the past but recently moved house and haven't found a tame homeopath yet. So the hayfever went untreated this year. I was shocked into doing something about it last week when I turned up to pick ds from school and his eyes were so red and sore that he couldn't open them - it was a particularly high pollen count that day. It didn't occur to me to ask why the school didn't call me to help earlier ......... Anyway, I went to Boots to get some emergency Opticrom which is, unfortunately, a steroid but works almost immediately and is ok in small doses. I got desloratadine (have the bottle in front of me for spelling!) prescribed by the doctor - 2.5 ml once a day. It is another antihistamine and is definitely non-drowsy. I don't know if you can buy it over the counter but it's free by prescription! So far, it's working.

It was good to read that cause I took my ds to the doctors last year when he was about 9 months old and I thought he had hayfever, I was told he was too young to get it!!? However, this year at the same time he had it again. I got some piriton and that does seem to work. I've heard the local honey one, but you do need to have it before the hayfever season, and they don't recommned it to under 1's I don't think. Try keeping windows shut at night too cause this stops the pollen getting in. Will she wear sunglasses? Luckily my ds will and this helps too. Another thing, be carefull with piriton cause apparently some people are allergic to it.

linzoid · 18/06/2003 17:37

I didn't know opticrom was a steroid. My ds has to use it 4 times a day all thru the summer months as his hayfever is so bad.

tamum · 18/06/2003 17:53

No, you're right, the active ingredient in opticrom is sodium cromoglycate, not steroids, so don't worry.

I have asked lots of GPs, midwives and chemists about New Era as an effective treatment for hayfever and they all gave it the thumbs down. I started taking it anyway as I'm pregnant and not supposed to take anything else, but 2 weeks later and my symptoms are as bad as ever. New Era also claim to be able to 'cure' psorasis, which is not true as there is no cure for psorasis. So I would take this medicine's claims with a pinch of salt.

As for anti-histamines, there are loads you can take now that do not make you drowsy and they are prescribed to children who have chickenpox. I would give your dd half a tablet a day to see if that helps. I do sympathise with you, this damn hayfever has been keeping me up at nights too and for the past couple of weeks I've been a prisoner in my own home! No mean feat when you have an active 3 yo to look after!
