I had a real bad case of flu a month ago and lost hearing in both of my ears. I cant hear a blessed thing unless its right against my ear. Its not wax, its to do with fluid in the ear.

Scared silly I will never hear again as this is distintly possible. What worries me most is not being able to hear my son.

Has this ever happened to anyone else and if so, did your hearing come back and how long did it take??

many thanks

Me too! lol, I had really bad tonsilitis a few weeks ago and since then my ears have gone funny, can hardly hear a thing from my right ear, very muffled, left ear isn't so bad but still not quite right.
I really need to go to docs too, I thought it would sort itself out after a while, but it doesn't seem to be shifting at all.

mamadadawahwah · 16/06/2005 00:39

thanks for replying. I am really scared. My hearing has been gone for a month. Went to docs got some antibiotics but no help at all. Been reading on the internet that sudden hearing loss can sometimes be permanent and i am now scared silly.

Can you keep me posted about your progress? By the way, my ears popped and my hearing came back for just one hour last week, when I was sipping a drink from a straw very voraciously (was thirsty). This might help with the ears as it uses all kinds of muscles. I have been sipping through straws for weeks now!

Will let you know if anything helps mamadadawahwah, It is a bit scary isn't it, I'm having real trouble figuring out where sounds are coming from at the moment, because I can only really hear from one ear (and not very well at that!) sounds are distorted. I was walking round the house in circles the other day trying to find the source of a noise I didn't recognise - 30 minutes later realised it was the tv through the surround sound speaker!!!

I've got this , with tinnitus as well. Feels like I'm underwater. Took a weeks course of amoxicillin and now halfway through a week of cephalexin, but neither seem to touch it. Have you got mucus cough/sinus touble/earache aas well? I've had this for a month and its getting on my nerves now. Please tell me it shifts soon!!

mamadadawahwah · 19/06/2005 22:57

Hi LHP, I was on a course of antibiotic straight into the ear and didnt work. Its been almost a month for me and still nothing. Hearing came back in one ear for about 10 minutes then blocked up again. Away to doctors again tomorrow and going to demand a full inspection.

Let me know how you get on as well sally and vicimelly. Its really irritating isnt it? And scary too. Will let you know if any improvement occurs and what if anything has helped.

Oh, yes by the way, i am in the throes of a chest infection, spurious amounts of coughing/phlegm, etc. so that dosent help much.

MMDDWW I'm no expert in these things (apart from having "damaged" ears myself), I would say that if the hearing came back (even for an hour)then there's hope, lots!. In my case it seemed like a bad flu damaged the nerve, so my ear is fine but the signal doesn't go through IYWIM. I didn't realised the thing was so bad until I took a hearing test and realised I have been doing lip reading without realising about it . I understand that you are scared, it is a long time without hearing, I would try to be seen by a ENT specialist (in case you are not seeing anyone yet), I believe that theres much at a stake so probably even going private in order to jump the queu is well worth it.

mamadadawahwah · 19/06/2005 23:13

Chandra, thats horrible. Yeah, you sort of get used to it after a while, which is not wise. Personally, i think a sudden loss of hearing should be treated as a medical emergency and help given immediately. I havent been taken very seriously yet and will be demanding more treatment tomorrow.

Sally, get thee to a doctor asap. The more reading i do on the internet, the more scared i am getting cause a lot of sudden loss of hearing becomes permanent and the longer you wait, the worse it can remain (apparently). Im not a doctor or clinically trained and i dont know if you have sought help but time to get some real quick. I thought this would go away and its not. Same as you.

Chandra · 22/06/2005 00:46

nosey because noisy... sure I am

vicimelly · 22/06/2005 00:53

Here with a hopeful message I now have most of my hearing back in my right ear, which was the worst, turns out the right one was just so blocked up after numerous throat infections/coughs/head colds over a number of weeks, and ordinary ear drops are reeeallly helping there. The left ear is a bit more problematic, apparently I have an infection and my eardrum is very inflamed! have been given antibiotic spray, which hasn't made the slightest bit of difference yet but I live in hope! I definitely feel a lot better now because I'm more blanced! can't hear properly out of both ears but at least they're now the same!!!!!
Hope you both get some answers from your Dr's

mamadadawahwah · 23/06/2005 10:19

Update on my ears. Hearing is coming back on left ear which was the worst. Right still bad but at least I can hear a bit now. Again, whilst sucking on a straw (drinking babies carton of juice) the hearing came back. I highly recommend this! Particularly the little straws cause they make you use more muscles.

How are you all faring?

NOw, how's sally doing?

Hi am resurrecting this thread, because I seem to be going the exactly the same thing right now, the only difference is that I have this incredible feeling of pressure in my head. Like the feeling you get when flying at low altitude. This has been going on for a week now, am on antibiotics but it is not getting any better at all. I also feel I am unable to work because it makes me feel exhausted if I am have to move around for more than an hour or two.
Have any of you guys had any relief, how long has it taken to go away.?
