*THRUSH PROBLEM*

Can anyone suggest another cream etc? I don't usually suffer with thrush, but after being on a few courses of anti-biotics lately, I've been suffering lately.

I was prescribed Diflucan (one tablet) and Canasten 2% cream on Monday, today the symptoms are exactly the same . Does anyone know how long this tablet takes to work - I'm thinking of going back again tomorrow - help please

the pessaries are better than the pill thing IME

Anyone there? "Sore willy" thread is getting help - could it be anything else? No nooky has been had for quite a while as I've been on antibiotics for a few months, so I'd rather abstain than be caught with baby number 5! .

Advice please

not sure how long the diflucan takes to work, but i agree wtih enid that pessaries work really well. but they still take a few days. poor you, i've only had thrush once but it was horrid.

Enid · 15/06/2005 18:55

also taking lactobacillus (fron healthg food shops) or live yogurt (eat it every day) helps keep it away

Thanks so much you two, I've got some of those good bacteria capsules in the fridge (I'd forgotten that I had them), I'm going to down a couple of them now - I can't sit still, or sleep so I hope those capsules help - thanks again

Pessaries and tampons dipped in live yoghurt.

BROWNY · 15/06/2005 20:37

Does the live yoghurt really work - seems a bit yucky - but the way I'm feeling at the moment I think I'll try it!

Its the bacteria. I have used it and if nothing else it is wonderfully cooling, soothing and refreshing. I don't think it's yucky, just mark it not for eating!

Hi Browny. I am plagued by thrush, so will watch this thread with interest.

Cutting out sugar from your diet is supposed to help. Acidophilus too, which you can buy as a capsule from a health food shop. Haven't tried either yet, I have to confess.

Might sound strange, but I am convinced I get an attack around ovulation at least every second month. Odd, eh?

whirlygiggle · 15/06/2005 21:12

I used to have a huge constant problem with Thrush...i tried all the creams, diets and pessaries under the sun .Then my DR prescribed me something called itriconazole...fansatic stuff!!!!

SaintGeorge · 15/06/2005 22:12

Suffered from chronic thrush for years, now only about once or twice a year.

Diflucan can take up to 4 days to work with seemingly nothing happening and then it seems to work suddenly. The tampon/yoghurt thing helps ease the irritation in the mean time.
I often needed 2 tablets 4 days apart though. Partner must be treated at the same time.

For future prevention:

Cotton only underwear, always laundered on a boil wash.
Preferably towels not tampons (tampons can dry the vagina and change the balance of flora).
Eat natural yoghurt at least twice a week.
No bubble baths.

BROWNY · 17/06/2005 10:08

Saintgeorge, thanks for all your advice . You were right about the Diflucan taking up to four days to work, yesterday it was just as bad as on Monday, but today I almost feel back to normal - YAY!! I've also been taking Acidophilus from Holland & Barratt - don't know if they helped - but I'm feeling much better today .

Thanks everyone for all your words of wisdom!

didn't know about the boil wash for underwear, what about the bath? I clean it before baby uses it, but could baby get thrush from the bath? Can't boil wash the bath!

SaintGeorge · 17/06/2005 10:51

ruty - don't worry.
Material is absorbent and can potentially hold infections. Cotton can be boil washed and also causes less sweating than man-made fibres, hence the recommendation.

If you buy the pessary do you then just buy the cream to treat your dp/dh ????

I seem to keep getting it around ovulation too but then it dissapears after a week or so, only to return again when i ovulate.

SaintGeorge · 17/06/2005 11:30

The cream will work but because men rarely have symptoms they have a habit of not using the cream for long enough. Probably a good idea get him to ask his GP for a Diflucan tablet (or preferably 2)

If you are in a repeating cycle with thrush (as I was) then you need to look at your diet (sugars, yeasts etc) and maybe also try a few of the suggestions in my earlier post.

Good luck - repeated thrush blighted my life for years and I can really sympathise.
