Lump in breast

Monkeygirl69 · 27/10/2009 21:32

I went to the doc's today as I thought I could feel a pea size lump in my right boob. The doctor confirmed this and also found another in my left boob. Has anyone else found lumps in their boobs post pregnancy and should I be worried?

Pink - I think the dr can get an idea of whether the lump is benign or not by examining it but ime will still always refer you to the breast clinic to be sure. The first time I had a lump my gp told me thst he was fairly sure that it was benign but still referred me for scans etc. turned out to be a cyst but they also found a fibroadenoma in the other breast.

So hopefully your dr may give you some reassurance tomorrow but will still want to refer you to to the breast clinic.

Don't lose sight of the fact that a huge majority of breast lumps are benign { 80 % are benign I believe } and that you are doing the right thing by getting checked out.

Monkeygirls - I found my breast lump when my ds was about 4 months old - it turned out to be a cyst but was told by dp and breast specialist that it was very common after having a baby.

Winetimeisfinetime · 30/10/2009 13:58

Oops that should read told by gp not dp !

pinkkoala · 30/10/2009 14:03

i know they say 85 per cent its likely to be benign but my mum was diagnosed when she was 50 on a routine mammogram, she had no lump, her mum had it in her 50's and my aunt got it in her 60's.

i haven't told my mum yet only my husband, we have just lost a friend to liver and bowel cancer.

do you think that even with my history i still have 85 per cent chance it could be benign.

my boobs are usually lumpy, but this feels different, when i prod it it does move a bit to the side, it doesn't move all round the breast though, its hard and i can feel the edge.

purplepeony · 30/10/2009 16:20

well done for amking the appt.

They will not be able to give you an answer that is 100% certain. When I thought I had a lump, the dr flt my breasts and said that some lumps are mobile and others are more fixed. I cannot remember which is the worst, but they may be able to tell you that much.

Good luck- report back!

Winetimeisfinetime · 30/10/2009 19:08

As far as I know { from the reading up I did when I found a lump } that having had family members who have had breast cancer doesn't raise your risk factor for getting it yourself by that much.
I remember being a bit more worried about my situation as we haven't had any breast cancer in our family and had hoped to be reassured that there was usually a very strong genetic link for breast cancer but found that in actual fact there wasn't.

I know how hard it is going through this but you are doing the right thing by getting checked out.
Let us know how it goes.

purplepeony · 30/10/2009 19:58

I think that it's 5% of all breast cancers are due to inherited faulty gene.

pinkkoala · 31/10/2009 13:15

i went to docs today, he said lump feels quite moveable and firm, he mentioned cyst or fibroadenoma, but has reffered me for mammogram, ultrasound and needle biopsy, i mentioned why he has sent for this and he said that its standard procedure with breast lumps, and not down to my family history.

can any of you remember if the same happened.

he did say that as it moves its a good sign, but can't give a definate answer until checked thoroughly.

have any of you gone private to get this done or waited on the nhs.

purplepeony · 31/10/2009 14:05

I am pleased you have gone and hope you won't have to wait too long for the tests- did he say how long? If not, phone up Monday and ask- I thought they had to see you within 2 weeks.

What's good is that he has booked you in for the full works. You might not need all 3 tests- depends on what they find.

I wouldn't begin to think of private- it would cost a fortune and unless you have insurance it could be a lot of money.
I paid for a private routine mammogram and it was £165, but ultrasound and needle biopsy would add a lot to that.

Winetimeisfinetime · 01/11/2009 12:01

I agree with purp;e - phone up the breast clinic on Monday to get an idea of when you will be seen.

I was recently referred to the breast clinic as a non urgent case { because of persistent breast pain} and was seen within a fortnight so hopefully you will be seen sooner.

Ultrasound, mammogram and needle biopsy is standard practice, I think and is what I had with my lump. They may not do all of them though depending on your age as ultrasound is better for younger women as they have denser breast tissue. The ultrasound showed my lump was a cyst and they aspirated some of the fluid to test with a needle { which wasn't painful }.

It is good that your gp felt it was likely to be a cyst or fibroadenoma.

littlerach · 01/11/2009 12:07

GPs don't seem to give false hope with these things, so that is good.

You hsould be seen within 2 weeks; I phones the unit and they found ana ppointment for me, it may be worth doing the same.

I looked into private but it would have been longer.

The GP recommended I have the ultra sound and aspiration, but the consultant was very thorough and sais he onl;y needed to examine me.

Cobblers · 01/11/2009 13:24

Good on you, Pink. I've now found another lump in my left. That's a total of 3 lumps. I'm going to stop looking.

pinkkoala · 01/11/2009 14:33

anybody know how young they class as young, i am 36.

the doc yesterday said he could't give me reassurance as they need checking thoroughly.

i was abit shocked though that i am having all three tests.

he said he would have refferd me even without the family history, when i asked what he thought he said could a cyst, but i said i thought they were painful, i have no pain. Or could be fatty lumps, the fact it is moveable is a good sign.

i thought going private would speed up the tests and results as i am a bag of nerves.

my mum and nan had it at 51 and my aunt had it at 68, he said i was more likely to get it then, That still doesn't make me feel any better.

he said he would normally do the needle test at the surgery but he wasn't going to do it yesterday, any ideas as to why.

purepurple · 01/11/2009 14:41

maybe he didn't do it yesterday because it was a saturday?
I was referred for a lump a few weeks ago.
I had a needle test and a mammogram.
The results came back as benign. I have a follow up appointment in April next year.
I did find waiting for the results quite stressful, but what relief when I got the results.
You are doing the right thing.
Let us know how you got on.

pinkkoala · 01/11/2009 14:52

i did think that may of been the reason, as it was a saturday.

pure purple-did your gp give you any idea by feeling the lump and did he suggest the three tests.

is it common to have lumps at this age.

purepurple · 01/11/2009 15:01

pk, the GP was very reassuring. He said because it felt very smooth that it was probably a cyst. I had had some pain that had lasted a couple of days then disappeared. He thought this was a burst blood vessel, hence the cyst.
He referred me straigt away. I actually got a phone call from the hospital that evening and went in the next day.
I was due to have all 3 tests but there was a problem with one of the machines and I had to go back the next week.
The GP was lovely and said I had done the right thing in getting it checked.
At least now I know.
If it had been cancer then at least I would have been prepared for that too.
It's the not knowing that does your head in.

Cobblers · 01/11/2009 18:00

I know. It's all I can think about and my DH is going away for 2 weeks. No crying into my pillow on my ownsome then.

pinkkoala · 03/11/2009 09:00

hi everyone,

just to let you all know, we went to hospital yesterday, saw consultant he said probably nothing too serious.

had mammogram, ultrasound they both showed fatty tissue, had a core biopsy taken as well and get the results next week.

went straight back to consultant, he said everything is clear and 99.9% sure its benign just did the biopsy as final check.

go back next monday.

i am glad i went, my husband came with me and we have decided to pay once a year to have private mammogram especially with my family history, although consultant did say that if i was to get it, it would probably be in my fifties.

i was scared stiff of going, no one is more terrified than me, but i would urge anyone else in the same boat to go.

Winetimeisfinetime · 03/11/2009 10:17

Well done for going pink. So pleased to hear that they thought it was all ok.

Hopefully having annual checks now will help stop you worrying about breast cancer in the future.
I also have to have regular checks as I am a candidate for bowel cancer, and my consultant told me that now I am being monitored, my risk of it deveoping is now lower than average and it has really reassured me.

Cobblers · 04/11/2009 21:01

Just got my appontment through for next week. I'll be on my own as DH is away. Does anyone know if I can bring my 5 month along?
I haven't told my mum yet as I don't want her to worry unecessarily.

yayitstheweekend · 10/11/2009 21:12

Glad you went and that it seems ok. I have had a lot of lumps and have had them all investigated. I go and see my consultant once a year for reassurance. I go privately as my insurance pays but I wouldn't hesitate to pay if I had to, you can't put a price on being able to be seen on the same day by someone you have complete confidence in.

When I discovered my first lump I saw the GP at 10am, had a mammogram at 2pm, and ultrasound at 6pm and had it drained at 6.30pm and the all clear by 7pm, all this in less than 24 hours from discovering the lump.

Snorter · 17/11/2009 21:07

Was it all Ok Cobblers?

Cobblers · 17/11/2009 21:22

Hey snorter, thanks for remembering. I had both a mammogram and an ultrasound. They showed that I just had dilated milk ducts and a couple of swollen lymph nodes in my armpit. Nothing at all to worry about. My mum came with me in the end as I couldn't get anyone to mind DS. It's a real weight off my mind(queen of the bleeding obvious.)
One really good thing happened - the consultant said I had really slim armpits. Oh yeah.
