My My poor dd aged 4 has contracted molluscum contagiosum. Its on her arm and her eye. Should I send her to nursery? I fear what the other mums will say/think...

I don't know much about molluscums but i thought they could hang around for years, if thats the case you can't keep her isolation for that long!

I worked in a nursery and a child attended had molluscums, we were advised that they weren't contagious. Maybe you are talking about a different type to me?

MarsLady · 12/06/2005 23:59

Yeah you can send her to nursery.

gingernut · 13/06/2005 00:10

My ds1 has molluscum and has been going to nursery. It is contagious but the chance of passing it on is quite small, according to this factsheet .

My dd caught this last year and I'm sorry to say this but be in for the long haul. She got it in July and it didn't clear up until March this year.

I don't know if it's a coincidence or not but in March she started scratching it really badly and I took her to the doctor as it was infected and weeping. He gave her antibiotics for the infection and told me that what people used to do years ago was prick them with a cocktail stick- he said of course I musn't do that to dd as she was only 1 at the time. He said that once the body had started attacking the virus it would carry on attacking and it would clear up.

Anyway, after this particularly bad attack by dd on the dreaded molluscum they did indeed ALL become red and infected and they cleared up within a week or so.

I stopped swimming with dd as I didn't want people staring at her and luckily it was in winter so they weren't visible but you have all my sympathies- it really is horrid but I'm afraid that there's nothing you can do apart for ride the storm out

suedonim · 13/06/2005 09:55

My dd caught molluscum on her arm and face. Afaik, no one caught it from her and we went swimming a lot (we were living in the tropics at the time). It took about two years but they eventually all disappeared.

singersgirl · 13/06/2005 11:30

Both mine have had it - took 9 months to clear in DS1 and DS2 got it just as DS1's finished. DS2 has loads of spots at the moment, but a lot are coming to a head right now, so I hope we're approaching the last few months - he's got them all over his bum and round his scrotum, poor chap! We still go swimming, but we don't bath him with other children who are visiting/when we're visiting.
BTW, I tried tea tree oil (as recommended on another thread) every day for about 2 months and it made no difference!

janinlondon · 13/06/2005 12:07

DD had these for about 14 months before they all cleared. A variety of methods worked to a limited degree. You can't keep your child off school/nursery for that amount of time.

It is such a pain it lasts so long...each of my children got it I think they gave it to one another. My dd used to get rash round hers. try not to let them pick them as my daughter has the odd scar!

mollymay · 13/06/2005 21:17

thanks for you replies. What did you say to other mums at nursery if they asked you what it was. I dread dd becoming treated like a lepar

Miranda, my dd has a patch on back of her knee and it's all red around it. GP prescribed antibio & hydrocortisone cream but it has come back. Did anything shift it for your dd?

gingernut · 13/06/2005 23:17

my ds tends to get eczema around where his molluscum is. Is this what your dd's red rash is dinny? (it would clear up with hydrocortisone/steroid). ds was prescribed hydrocortisone for it. Children with eczema are more prone to molluscum, presumably because they scratch their eczema, break the skin a bit and are more prone to catching the molluscum virus. So, she may have had a bit of eczema there anyway but it wasn't obvious. If it is eczema, keep treating it with the hydrocortisone. My GP said it's best to do that as they tend to scratch the eczema and then scratch the tops off the molluscums which then bleed and may scar.

pixiefish · 14/06/2005 14:28

mollymay-i just explained that it was viral and not catching as such. Also explained that once they've had it then it'll never come back apparently so 'I was glad she'd caught it young as other children can be sooooo cruel' if she'd caught it when older. That last comment tended to shut them up

dinny · 14/06/2005 19:01

thanks, Gingernut - yes it is ezcema round it, just that patch left (she did have more ezcema but it's all gone - for good, I hope!). the cream did clear it (used it for a week) but it came back again. am seeing GP about it next week again. should I put more cream on in the meantime, you think? thanks, Dinny

Blossomhill · 14/06/2005 19:08

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream cured my dd from molloscums. It was cod who told me about it and within a week they had all gone

dinny · 14/06/2005 19:09

Whaaaaaat? Really, BH?

gingernut · 14/06/2005 23:03

dinny, yes I would continue with the hydrocortisone. I have been applying it mixed with emollient to my ds's arm where he has eczema on top of the molluscum, just to stop him scratching. Once the eczema is clear I just continue with the emollient until the eczema flares up again.

lunachic · 14/06/2005 23:48

there was a thread on here about a year ago which said that elizabeth arden 8 hour cream was good for treating them
from what i remember on thread it was the salicylic acid in in that was probably the effective ingredient(apparently used to treat warts)
just thought id mention this dont know if youll be able to find thread or not

lunachic · 14/06/2005 23:49

what are molluscums ??

lunachic · 14/06/2005 23:55

too tired to do link but look in archived messages and its in health

type in (EA) 8 hour cream look in text of msg (not subject lines)

gingernut · 15/06/2005 00:23

lunachic, see photo here . It's a viral skin condition. I put a link to a factsheet further down the thread.

NatureDoc · 15/06/2005 19:39

homeopaths and naturopaths have good strategies for getting rid of molluscum - best bet is to find someone good in your area. Best luck.

hems · 18/01/2008 16:19

my children have a problem with this terrible virus and i have being treating it for 5 yrs
