Hey pipsqueak...
Why have you chosen hypnotherapy? I have found that many people want therapy "done to them" and they don't want to participate - talk etc.
Sometimes it can be that easy - depends on why you overeat/have gained weight etc. Hypnotherapy is fab for many things - particularily changing/controlling habits , and reducing anxiety.
If you have deepseated issues, and you just want it (therapy) all to be done to you, then it probably won't work - its not magic.

I would go to someone who is skilled/trained in many different areas ie CBT/ Hypnotherapy

pipsqueak - I think you should come out now - you'll wrinkle

I had it for smoking - felt fabulous afterwards and for the whole of...that evening. Woke up gasping for a fag.

I have a few friends who have tried this with fantastic results.

raindroprhyme · 04/10/2009 22:23

my husband saw a hypnotherapist who used a variety of talking therapy techniques to help him quit smoking and then a year later lose 2 stone.
for the smoking he had weekly one hour sessions for 12 weeks. for the weight loss 8weeks.
we are now going as a couple in preparation for the birth of our 3rd child. if only it was a easy as being hypnotised fro a pain free birth. It is very intensive and at times emotional but is having a huge impact on my perspective on everyday life and my feelings about the birth.

in my opinion a quick fix never works you need to deal with underlying issues in order to have the long term benefit.

my husband found the weightloss very hard work. he had to deal with issues he has with food that stem from childhood and change his whole attitude to what and why he ate. he has managed to maintain his weight loss tho for the first time in 5 years and be a permanant non smoker as well.

thanks all - interesting perspecitves . i am thinking of hypnotherapy because i tried it for gving up smoking and it worked for me so i have confidence in it as a method i guess . i am not expecting a magic cure but would like to learn to think about food in a more healthy way than i do at the moment . i spent couple of ours googling and the difficulty is that there doesnt appear to be a single registered body / umbrella organisation and all of the therapists close to me seem to have different qualifaictions etc so it is heard to know which to choose. i am being cautious about it as i do see this as a fairly long-term thing of needing quite a few sessions and the relationship fit is important i think . i will think about it a bit more though - thanks for your responses - much appreciated .

You're right - there is no professional body, and that is a shame.

Some are also counsellors, and are members of the BACP so that may be something to look out for.
I studied with LCCH - our "body" is the BSCH but to be fair - I don't think there is that much of a difference BSCH and the General Hypnotherapy Register (I think thats what they are called). The good thing is that each body whats to be the "official" Body when the day comes that there is only one, and each many of the training schools are raising the bar themselves in terms of training etc.

Has anyone had hypnotherapy for OCD? I am thinking of going for that - the trouble is there are quite a few charlatans and I want to find a recommended person who specialises in OCD....any ideas welcome.

Lovelydear - I am in Dorset, I am afraid.

Any Dorset hypnotherapists who think they can tackle a handwashing maniac please feel free to get in touch!

purpleduck · 07/10/2009 21:49

Hi pipsqueak - I am in hampshire, and at the moment I don't do much practicing - I have another job as well. As for your fellow - it sure seema alot! The GHR is the General Hypnotherapy Register - so maybe have a look at their website and see how much traning they need to get all those letters!

Good Luck!
