I think I can but is it safe to give both ibuprofen and calpol at the same time to my 1year old???

Bit nervous about doing so

Our GP has told us it's OK to "leapfrog" them - which I think means you can give Ibuprofen 2 hours after the Calpol, then Calpol again after another 2hours and so on. But I guess I wouldn't do it for more than a day without checking with the GP or NHS Direct

PandaBear · 23/05/2003 09:44

I spoke to NHS Direct about this a few months ago. We were told give Calpol first, then 2 hours later nurofen (or whatever ibuprofen you use). Carry on with this - Calpol at 6 hourly intervals, Nurofen at 4 hourly. If the two conicide, give Calpol, and then start the nurofen again 2 hours later.

We only needed to do this for 3 doses of calpol and 2 of nurofen. HTH.

thanks sounds a bit like rocket science but its put my mind at rest.

Think it is ok - they're from different drug families. Adults can aslo take codeine based drugs at the same time as well, I think - not for long periods, I guess. But short term if pain really severe.

futurity · 23/05/2003 10:00

I have been told by doctor that you can give them at the same time if pain is bad (ie molar teething which is why we had to). They said the only problem with doing it like that is that you then have to wait 4 hours before being able to give one again (rather than doing the 2 hourly thing).

Thankfully molars are through now..well the first lot anyway!!

mands1, Just check the box but I think you can only give Ibuprofen 3 x 5ml spoon in a 24 hour period. I found this the best thing for teething.
I have useed it along with Calpol when my ds has been poorly.

Mands1 - can I ask why you want to give the 2 together?

Furball · 23/05/2003 12:43

I've given the two together - especially good if needed to brng a temperature down.

Also very handy info for adult info, incase of bad period pains or headaches etc.

hmb · 23/05/2003 18:50

I used to work for the company that developed Ibuprofen. It is OK to use them together as long as you stager the doses. They will both act to reduce pain and bring down a temperature. Don't do this for too many days, as you might be masking the symptoms of something that needs furter treatment.

allatsea · 23/05/2003 19:20

I have also been told by a doctor to give both together, it is especially effective at bringing down temperature. As we've had to do this over the last 3 days I think I'll take your advice hmb and book dd in to see the doctor

Doctor told us to this too last week when DD (13 months) was poorly after her MMR jab. We were told to stagger them but not to go over the recommended dosages for the day. It should help with increased pain where one alone isn't enough, or to try to keep a persistant temperature down.
