How do you know if they have tongue tie?

DS is 7 months now and when he was first born we noticed his tongue seemed to be 'tied' quite far forward. Read that they usually resolve themselves and is only a problem if they are unable to feed effectively. Trust me, DS has
been managing to feed very well, he's huge! But he can't stick his tongue out and hasn't blown raspberries yet, don't actually think he can. His tongue is fixed basically at his gums. Shall I take him to docs?

My friends ds had this and had to have a mini operation to have it cut. Hopefully your ds will sort its self out.

Dabihp ... I think so! Positioning is key as you probably know. Have you had any help from a lactation consultant? If not, it would be worth asking your midwife or HV to recommend someone and if there isn't anyone locally, give the NCT Breastfeeding Line ( 0870 444 8708 8am-10pm everyday) or La Leche League (0845 120 2918) a call for tips and advice. Have you tried putting a post on the B/feeding forum cos you'll probably get lots of advice there. I hope it works out for you but if it doesn't, don't beat yourself up!

Quick update, have been to HV and she has told me to go back to the doctors and tell them DS does need an op before age one.

My GP who has tongue tie himself said that DS was definitely so and would have the op in the future. This was at his first check. He did have all the characteristics but it seems to have completely resolved (he is now 2.5 yrs).
He's never blown raspberries! Will have a good poke around when I do his teeth in the morning just to be certain.

Well I feel I can go along if I do get referred (doctors don't like to be told they are wrong, I should know!) and find out all that it entails. DS should be babbling a bit at just over 7 months. Lots of screaming and ummmms but nothing else at all. So if it is simple proceedure I think I would like it to make sure he will be fine.

Hi Flossam,

Have finally dug out the informantion sheet I was sent from Southampton hospital - if you contact me I will send you a copy of it, not too sure how you do that though, I'm fairly new to all this technological stuff! It's a really good sheet to put your mind at rest and the guy is apparently one of the main soecialists in the country for tongue-ties so you may be able to contact him directly. Its very informative but written in a down-to-earth manner eg. "The reasons I divide tongue-ties are, 1. its every childs right to stick their tongues out at adults, 2. it is important to be able to lick ice-creams and yoghurt pot lids....." etc etc.. Hope this helps!!

I am going to push for it to be done I think. I have done a bit of research and it is such a tiny thing to be done that may prevent a whole host of problems. Wish me luck, I am going on the rampage!
