Go to see your GP about it. If it is affecting her speech they may suggest a little op to cut the frenulum (is that what it is called?) and correct theproblem. I know a couple ofchildren whohave had it done, and it is not too bad.

Can she stick her tongue out at all?

caroline18 · 21/05/2003 10:44

yes she can but she cannot lift her tongue to the roof of her mouth ,the frenulum seems to be very tight when she lifts her tongue up.
Would this give her a lisp when talking
Thank you ever so much for your reply

She is only three which means that a speach therapist has more chance of helping her. Go and see profesionals they will be able to put your mind at rest. They can do wonderful things!

Does the frenulum attach all the way to the tip of her tongue? Is the tip of her tongue slightly notched? Can she touch the tip of her tongue to the roof of her mouth (just behind her teeth)? You have already said that she CAN stick her tongue out, which is a good sign. Basically if her tongue is notched or if she can't protrude it or lift it then that is a signal that her tongue tie MAY affect her speech. If she can do these things then the tongue tie probably won't affect anything. Do bear in mind that lots of 3 year olds have lisps.

However, if you are concerned go and see your GP about it - not least because there is often a LONG waitng list to see speech and language therapists.

If you do a search on Google you will probably find all sorts of things about tongue tie....

My dd2 had her cleft palate corrected when she was 6ms (now 3), whilst we were in hospital there were 2 other children having their tounge ties corrected. They were in over night. My dd is also checked regularly by a speech therapist. Try not to worry, speech therapists can work wonders and the surgery (if needed) is straight forward. HTH

I have just received today in the post, a questionnaire to fill in about 3 year old.
When did she start talking? If we can understand her. The kind of pregnancy I had and the kind of birth I had.
I have to return questionnaire and take it from there.
thanks
