"Older" mum feeling very fed up and let down with her "strange" body !!!

Hi all .... I've only recently discovered this site (and could almost have cried when I did, realising there are other frazzled mums like me, but that's another topic ....) and, for my very first post I'm going to totally embarrass myself by owning up to my very "disloyal" body. What I'm hoping for of course, is that someone will respond, saying "I know just what you mean ..." ! Hope I've put it in the right place ?

I'm 40 years old (I mean young, of course) and a mum of two. A teenage "Kevin" aged 15 and a daughter aged 20 months.

I've always looked younger than my age and enjoy playing the guessing game with people who don't know me .... "how old do you think I am ?" I must also admit to feeling quite smug at getting pregnant at 38 with no trouble.

However .... and finally getting to the point, I've felt so "let down" by my body ever since having my baby girl. There I am thinking I can still be "trendy" (with a bit of effort) and scrub up not too badly - and there's my body doing all sorts of strange things I don't like.

Aside from how difficult it is to lose the baby weight (know that's an ageless problem) I now find that I have very dodgy hips which always ache even if I go for a short walk (like, a mile or 2) and perpetual & painful acid heartburn (doesn't matter what I eat, I have it most of every day). My periods are now really heavy to the point of being potentially embarassing and my hands also keep seizing up - almost like the joints lock and I have to "unfold" my fingers - this happens when I'm gardening, or cleaning for example. On top of that, I probably have the most frightful "teenage" skin I've ever had since being a real teenager - not loads of spots, but those I do have are deep and nasty, and on my chin and jaw, not to mention my back. The very worst thing though is that I seem to be sprouting extra hair all over the place !!! and double My top lip is distinctly fuzzier and I am at the mirror with the tweezers daily (I'm sure no-one wants to hear about the horror which is my bikini line). On several occasions I have gone to brush off what I've thought was a loose hair (from my head) and to my horror, found it was a great long (about 4/5 inches !!!) singular and attached hair growing in the middle of nowhere ! .... like, out the side of my neck, the back of my ear and the base of my spine.

At this point, I feel like crawling away and hibernating in a cave

Seriously, I just can't believe what my body is doing to me - it's like it's saying "wake up kiddo, you are getting older, so there". Okay, so everyone gets a few spots now and again and I got bad heartburn throughout being pregnant, but I had none of this stuff before I had my daughter.

Am I being a complete hypochondriac, or an hysterical old biddy for that matter, or must us "girls" in their 40s accept things like these as inevitable decline ?

My partner keeps telling me I should go to the doctor but at this rate I'll need to take a "shopping list" with me so I don't forget all the symptoms.

Please, someone, tell me I'm not alone !

(Oh - and thanks for trawling through this mammoth post)

Thankyou to everyone who replied ... not that I'd ever wish it on anyone else but it's reassuring to be told you're not a complete freak. It rather amazes me - in a nice way of course - that complete strangers can take the time to reply to something so trivial and be so friendly

Pinotmum - I had completely forgotten the grey hairs as well, guess what, I'd never had a single one until after my daughter though this really is the least of my worries as I tint my hair regularly anyway.

I will call the doctors this week. 20 months post-pregnancy of crippling acid heartburn on its own is bad enough, let alone everything else !

hello catsmums have read all this thread but ive seen that a lot of people have mentioned a hormone imbalance
just thought it was worth mentioned that if your interested in alternative medicines that a company called neways have a product called endau to balance hormones-which is only prescribed by doctors to people who need it.you might not need it but i though it worth mentioning as an option if you are going to gp and he perscribes you somethine a site .
if you are interested neways have a site which i think is newaysco.uk if you cant find the list of doctors on there cat me and ill send it to you
id always recommend trying the alternative routes of treatments first
another good site is abchomeopathy.com were you can put in your symptoms and be given a suitable homeopathic remedy
just remembered something that someone said to recently -that she was taking milkthistle to clean her liver which is apparently where hormones can build up and cause problems-she said her skin had really cleared up

you might thing these suggestions are cr*p but hopefully not!

ps im 33 and ive had the stiff fingers ,get spots ,the odd stray hair have a jelly belly, droopy boobs etc etc so dont worry too much !!

motherinferior · 08/06/2005 14:17

OK, Catsmother, been to the doc yet?

TracyK · 09/06/2005 09:17

I was just thinking that my body was falling apart too.
I have 2 stone to lose, knackered pelvic floor, piles, liver spots on hands, sore fingers in the morning, sore shoulder leading to sore head, dry red patches on elbows and legs. Now this week I've got cystitis! but an adorable ds! don't think he'll be getting a brother or sister tho! ps am 38.

Catsmother · 09/06/2005 15:00

Hi MI .... no I haven't been yet, but have booked an appointment for Monday. When doing so, in person, as I had to go to town anyway, the receptionist announced in a loud voice "it's (meaning the PC) flashing up a warning saying you need a smear !!!" ...

... good grief, aren't these people given pointers in tact & diplomacy in their job ?

Ah, my lifelong flat feet might be a reason why I don't ache. Nice to see them coming in useful.

SleepyJess · 09/06/2005 15:39

Hi Catsmother

I have not read throroughly thro whole thread (in a mad hurry..as usual MN has totally distrated me!)..soexcuse meif I duplicate anything.. but you seem to have quite a lot of symptoms of an under active thyroid. I know something about thyroid disorders because DS has a congential thyroid condition. This can be easily tested for and even more easily treated! I have spoken to people who have said that suddenly gettting treatment was amazing because they hadn't realised how crap they felt.. until suddenly they didn't!

PCOS (poycystic ovary syndrome) can cause excess body hair/weight & period problems as well I believe.

Welcome to MN.. Frazzled Parent City!

i have acne (well a few spots) for the first time in my life now i'm 40. harumph. now that's not supposed to happen, is it?

Easy · 09/06/2005 15:51

Not withstanding your aches and pains, It's good to meet you here. Sometimes I feel like the only oldie. I'm 44, ds is nearly 6.

Do go and ask the DR. It may be a thyroid thing, or it may be the beginnings of menopausal change (I'm afraid). But both can be treated.

Catsmother · 09/06/2005 15:58

Hope not Easy .... was kinda leaving the door open to the possibility we might ahve another one !

I'll pop my head over the parapet long enough to look round and admit that some of those symptoms are not entirely unknown to me. (I'm 40 by the way with DCs of 3.5 and 1.5). Can't remember who said that getting up from the bathroom floor takes longer, but it does and is usually accompanied by a kind of "oooooooooooooohh" sound (and I do Pilates and run quite a lot). I noticed DH (also 40) making that noise when he sat down on the sofa after a long day and pointed out how old it made him sound and he responded that I had been doing it for ages and he had refrained from saying anything about it.

Easy · 09/06/2005 17:00

We're all there, aren't we?

But older mums are reknowned for having more patience with their offspring, etc. etc.

Just looking for our advantages here.
