any advice 2 year badly constipated all the time!!

hi all

any advice my ds2 (2) just doesnt poo 4 days on end [max about 9!!!!]

been to doctors and keep getting advice on diet!!

he is on movicol i sacet a day, plenty of fluids, plenty of fresh fruit and veg.

and nothing then he gets so constipated, its heart breaking.

i have tryed everything wheat free diet, hi fibre diet, dates , fresh orange, fennel drinks etc etc.

should i demand to see another doctor??

i feel at 2 he should be able to poo without the movicol, [which doesnt work] and worry he will never be able to go by himself

I think you could go to your doctor and ask to be referred to a specialist, yes.

how much milk does ds drink each day? Milk can be constipating - try to increase his plain water intake

avoid bananas too

you are doing the right things, hopefully a specialist can help you to unpick what the cause of the constipation is.

how long has he been on movicol? If there have been problems for a long time it could take months for it start to get back to "normal"

My dd used to have lactulose. It worked well. She's now 8yrs and has had no problems since she was 2.6.

has been like that since around 6mts old

i dont buy bananas for that reason

milk wise about 12 oz a day thats including food again for the same reason

water wise about 7 12 oz bottles a day {he drinks it out of a bottle as he drinks it all}

every time i go to the doctors, and its every few mtns, she gives me more movicol,
and makes me feel bad thats its his diet!!!

but am going to ask about a specialist because he also has senkot, and mini suppostories!!!

Hi there - I am sorry you are going through this - we had similar with my DD and it is very distressing for all concerned. My DD was on Lactulose and Senna from about 6 months til 5 years old. They helped but did not solve problem. Had a conversation with HV at pre school check who was surprised she was not on Movicol which I think is now the treatment of choice. Maybe your DS needs a higher dose ? Someone I know had very bad problems with their DS who saw consultant , had to have enemas - even had tissue sample of bowel taken - there was never an explanation but the problem did resolve with time - I think round about 5 /6 yrs old. I know hearing that problem should go away in 3 years time is not very encouraging ! I would go back to Gp - have another chat - see about increasing Movicol dose - maybe ask for consultant opinion - thing is I think this is really pretty common problem and if your son can poo every 4 days that is actually quite good going in the scale of these problems - you could try dropping his milk as I've heard that can contribute.

lactose doesnt work

movicol about a year ago started off 1 every 2 days

then half a sachet a day

now 1 a day

senkot if really bad

and suppositories if still really bad

OK - so now I've read the bit about the suppositories , your poor DS - have you tried Lactulose ?

he normally goes about every 7/8 days sometimes 9/10 days thats the really bad days when he just crys and moans and finally passes a marble sized poo

this goes on for about a day when he finally passes a huge [and a i mean huge] poo
which doesnt even fit in the nappy

it just softens it a little bit, doesnt help the constipation, he was on 5ml a day then twice a day and didnt make any difference so was moved on to movicol

the huge poo is after movical, two lots of senkot and a suppositories.

You could try increasing the lactulose - I'm sure we were on more than 10 ml /day - but we found it difficult to get DD to take it . I know exactly what you mean by a huge poo ! Def go for a hospital referral they have different things they can prescribe - you don't want your DS to suffer for possibly another 3 yrs - with hindsight we should have done more for our DD.

thank you just been a really bad day been in the bath with him trying to help him by rubing his little belly in the warm water and still nothing.

going to ring the doctors in the morning and am not going to be fobbed off any more he is so much pain, cant do another 3 years of this!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, my ds is 7 now and has been suffering constipation since he was four. We tried all remedies listed and the only one that worked was movical. He started off with 12! sachets for a day, then 10 the next day, 8,6,4, and then on two a day for a year! It really is the best thing. His bowels were so badly impacted at one stage that an enema didn't work. And i now keep a box of movical up in the press but haven't had to use it in a year as he is going itself. Movical is great as it doesn't dehydrate, so you don't have to give extra water, the water he takes it in counts as fluids taken. Also unlike other remedies,which push down the stools, so they are sore when passed, movical gently softens them making them easier to pass. I would go to the doc and ask is it ok to up the dose? I think two is the minimum age for movical and you are prob on the max for that age but even if you could up dosage to two sachets a day for a week or two and then go back down it might help.

I once knew a child who had similar probs and once did not poo for five weeks. She was in a right old state poor thing.

Turned out it was a milk allergy.

Worth considering - of course it could be other things too, but maybe suggest to doctor?
