Heavy periods - Tranexamic Acid

funkycool · 15/09/2009 17:46

My Doctor has prescribed the above for my heavy periods which have made me anaemic. Feel reluctant to take them as I've never taken anything other than paracetamol before. Has anyone taken/does take these? If so, have you experienced any side effects? Thanks.

Just watching Casino Royale. Its gone to the news now so i thought i would have a look and see if you were on.

Yes all those tests ,all that expense too, thank god it was all on bupa. You say just a only a virus, i was really scared as they said it was then all auto-immune related, so of course i started thinking of aids, hiv ,cancer, rheumatoid arthritis.Initially because my abdomen was so sore the gastro surgeon was my first port of call and he was going to look into immflamatory bowel disease ( chrohns etc)and other related problems, but because the problem seemed to affect most of my body in some way ,a rheumatologist seemed more pertinent.so he referrred me to the MRI
Meanwhile the gastroenterologist, who was the doc that i initially saw ,was the one who did the colonoscopy.
You are sedated with rohypnol, the date rape drug, so you are actually conscious, but you have no memory of what happens. It wipes about 6 hours of your memory away...i could have given him my bank account numbers for all i know...LOL. My BF said i talked absolute rubbish.( it took so much of my memory away that i didnt remember having a smear that night that i was booked in for on the same day) I am definitely no hypochondriac ,but it really set my mind racing. Was glad they did all the tests because it ruled out some very major serious diseases.
Yes i had itchy rashes( ...thats what i think started first, scalp, face neck and abdomen and my eyes were really sore and felt dry and as if they burned.

my hands and feet felt as if i had hot gloves quite often, but worse at night and first thing in the morning.

because i had a good relationship with my gastro enterologist( i have personally been in the medical prof for 38 years)he took me so seriously and he did the test for parvo when i asked him, as he was completely baffled by how ill i was. He started to think i had serious ME. When results came back positive he actually sent me a clinical paper on parvo as he was so interested in its GI side effects.

the gastro cons did igG and IgM ,before i had Parvo test and found them positive so that was an indication that something was going on but it can be positive after any virus. They just tell a doctor if you have an acute or chronic viral illness.it then me took months of research and mind searching to remember what was going on when i started to be ill. DS2 wa 7 and at infant school when alot of them had come down with a funny bug at the same time. never thought anything about it becos it affects mainly children.

started a new post 'Parvo virus in adults' if you want to carry on in there its up to you

alypaly · 19/09/2009 23:43

how old did you say you were funkycool. how old are your DC's

funkycool · 20/09/2009 09:54

Thanks for starting a new thread, I'll reply on here as I can see your message and copy it on the new thread too.

I'm 42 - it's so distressing feeling unwell. I've always been fit and healthy.

When I became v. ill in march, my DC were 9 and 3, so one at school, one at nursery. I've no idea if they had this virus, would it always be obvious in children? I might check with the school and nursery if there were any outbreaks around march.

I've been worrying about IBD/crohns because my bowels are not right, but then again I have so many other symptoms. My whole body has been affected in some way or other.

I think I'll wait to see the result of the auto-immune test and then go from there.

funkycool · 20/09/2009 10:04

Actually I was 41 too when it started! (I was 42 in may).

Really appreciate you starting a new thread, it'll be interesting to hear other experiences too.

totally agree. if i can help in any way..please ask, as i would hate anyone to go through the hell i went through....i honestly thought i was going to be like that for the rest of my life, there seemed no end to feeling ill

funkycool · 20/09/2009 10:20

I feel like I've been through absolute hell. Some days I've hardly been able to look at my children, because of the absolute guilt that I'm going to die and they will grow up without a mother. Although I'm not as ill as I was a few months back I do feel like I'm just getting through life and I will never ever get my health back.

regarding side effects of tranexamic acid - it can make me very drowsy, especially for the first few months I used it and whenever I have been ill.

I find myself somewhat spaced out and usually unable to drive for the first few days, frequently having to pinch myself to concentrate etc, even having to go home from work after taking it and becoming very 'wobbly' and confused on occasion - which takes some explanation . That said it is definately worth it - but I only take it when I absolutely need it and if I can get away with just the mefenamic then I do.
