Who is best hysterectomy specialist in London?

I have to have a hysterectomy in a few months time after a last attempt at IVF. I had borderline ovarian cancer 8 years ago, and have been monitored ever since. We have one son and wanted more children but have had no joy in conceiving 'naturally'. As I am now 41, I feel I am pushing my luck with dodgy ovaries so am having last ditch IVF which has been sanctioned by my cancer specialist as long as I have my ovaries and womb removed straight after.

I can go anywhere in London or the south - does anyone have a hysterectomy guru to recommend?

I don't know about London. But I had one 7 weeks ago in North Hampshire (just womb and cervix whipped out, ovaries are still in) and recovery hasn't been too bad.

I continue to sing the praises of Michael Dooley- lovely and expert- gynae to the Royals- did Camilla's hyster. Also a fertility director of clinic in Dorset, but works in London at 3 venues- see website.

Private- but not mega bucks for consultations. You'd need insurance for the op though.

Yes, he is Poundbury but I see him in London, as he does 3 venues there.

Hi pp - I haven't yet made one - I am having an investigation into an ovarian cyst at the moment and when that's over I will go and see him. Does he do general gynae stuff like cysts and endo too, do you know?

He does everything- I have "been under him" for 18 months for an ovarian cyst plus general stuff.

purplepeony - Just wanted to let you know that I haven't contacted Dr Dooley yet as I still haven't had my CT scan results back. I haven't forgotten to let you know how it goes.......

purplepeony - I just wanted to say a huge thank you for recommending Mr Dooley. I went to see him today and I feel so much better already - he was so quick to suggest a plan of action, do tests and so on. It was really refreshing to meet a doctor with a holistic approach coupled with patience and lack of arrogance. Thank you. I tried to pm you but mumsnet won't let me!

Hi purple - yes, he is great, I liked him a lot. I had a suspicious scan come through to my horror, so he is going to analyse the results for me. Then he will do my hysterectomy BUT in conjunction with an excellent cancer surgeon who will be assisting and then analysing the results. So if I have had a receurrence they will find it. I am still humming and hawing over whether to have a last gasp IVF. Part of me really wants to but another part of me thinks I am pushing my luck and if the worst comes to the worst we can use donor eggs. AAAGH. It's such a HARD decision.

doggus- I'd let mr D take the lead- he is the best and should be able to guide you.

Maybe your scan won't be as suspicious as you 1st thought and the hyst. can be avoided? Maybe you can do IVF meantime? let him say what he feels are the pros and cons.

I have seen for almost 2 years now and am always so impressed with his approach whoch is to tell you the facts then let you decide. I started HRT with him, after trying every lifestyle/healthy eating plan going,and I know he is not an HRT evangelist any more, but he quite frankly said that up to 5 years is safe, they THINK, and that I have more chance of being killed in my car which is quite true. He says he can only give people the facts then they have to make their own choices.

Thanks purplepeony. A hyst. can't be avoided unfortunately, but I feel so dreadful I am welcoming it! He is going to guide me through the HRT minefield too, so glad you pointed him out to me. I'll let you know what happens next!
